Product Description

Product Description

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, commonly known as IBS, causes misery to millions. After the common cold, it is the most frequent reason for visiting a GP. Fortunately, much can be done to control and even overcome the worst symptoms through diet and exercise. "The First Year: Irritable Bowel Syndrome" is an informative patient-expert's guide to managing this condition. Heather Van Vorous, herself an IBS sufferer for over two decades, helps the reader understand how the digestive system works and why things go wrong. She then details the range of treatment options and vital lifestyle changes necessary for improvement, explaining: five key strategies to control symptoms; ten commandments of eating for IBS; how exercise can help; how stress affects IBS and how to manage it; effective complementary therapies; and how to eat safely at restaurants, with friends and when travelling.

About the Author

Heather Van Vorous, author of Eating for IBS, is a food writer specialising in healthy gourmet and ethnic recipes, with a special interest in cooking for people with bowel disorders. Her website, www.eatingforibs.com, is the Internet's premier source of IBS dietary information.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only book you'll need to help you cope with IBS, 12 Jan 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome): The First Year - An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (Patient-expert Guides) (Paperback)
Having bought every book I could get my hands on after my IBS was diagnosed after 15 years of illness I can honestly say that this is the only one that worked for me, and really made sense from start to finish. The eating guidelines do differ from all the other books, but if like me you've found that the prevailing advice - based around a high fibre diet - had actually been making the problem worse, then everything will at last make sense when you read this book. (The key is to make sure you eat the right type of fibre - an absolutely crucial distinction I've never seen made elsewhere).
Quite simply, this book has changed my life. Actually, while I believe it is the only book you'll really *need* to help you live with IBS, you can almost make a virtue out of the condition if you get a copy of Van Vorous's cookbook as well, 'Eating for IBS' - really delicious, easy recipes that make sticking to the eating guidelines a pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have IBS, this is essential, 30 Aug 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome): The First Year - An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (Patient-expert Guides) (Paperback)
Finally, a book that isn't filled full of doom and gloom and depair for IBS sufferers - the author Heather Van Vorous is herself a sufferer of IBS and her book makes you feel as if there is light at the end of the tunnel.

When I was diagnosed with IBS I wasn't actually told what it was or how to live with it - this book has answered many of the questions that I had, and continues to be of great support to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have IBS, you simply must buy this book, 25 Nov 2006

This review is from: IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome): The First Year - An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (Patient-expert Guides) (Paperback)
This book was bought for me just under a year ago. Simply put, it has changed my life.

If you have IBS you simply *must* buy it. If you know someone with IBS, you *must* buy it for them. The five key strategies she outlines for dealing with IBS are absolute gold and are worth paying *whatever* they are charging for this book on their own.

This is not the usual rubbish you've read about IBS, nor is it a miracle cure. Its a dependable, versatile strategy that gives you the ability to change your life.
