Product Description

Product Description

A collection of poems from the front-line of urban life, the cabs of lorries and the bluebell woods of mortality.
Poetry in text and audio. Read or listen to the words written and voiced aloud by the author, included together in this book.

Oscar Sparrow was born in 1949 as the sonic boom of jets and babies began to draw a new world map of umbilical vapour trails.
He was brought up on cod liver oil and National Health orange juice. As the colour red leached its way out of the map of the British Empire,
Oscar attended a die-hard Church school designed to create noble savages to serve what was left of the savage Nobles.
The Eleven Plus exam revealed that he could not even count to eleven and he became a mechanic, labourer, truck driver, boxer and poet.
He read Wordsworth and Ford Cortina manuals in a lorry cab near both Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
Eventually he found himself in London where he joined the Metropolitan Police. Car chases and riots followed but he did not take it personally.
He spent his spare time touring the Art galleries, singing Piaf and learning French and Italian. Eventually The Authorities fell for the con
and gave him a desk job in the Art department of Interpol London at Scotland Yard. Throughout all this time he was a would be poet,
short story writer and novelist.

To Oscar, poetry is the spoken word. A free, downloadable, 45 minute MP3 audio book of these poems, read by the author, is included.

Reviews:

  • 'Expertly Wrought and a Joy To Read!'
  • 'These poems cover many aspects of life and living, relationships,
sorrows and joys. I really enjoyed them as they are understandable and
    accessible'
  • Forged from the authentic iron of experience, the author's tight, terse
lines are rife with vivid imagery that appear culled from his daily
life, yet are transformed into something mysterious, surprising, and
    utterly profound.'

About the Author

Oscar Sparrow was born in Winchester UK in 1949, apparently thanks to the American Marshal Aid programme to re-build Europe after the war. As the colour red leached its way out of the map of the British Empire, Oscar attended a die-hard Church school designed to create noble savages to serve what was left of the savage Nobles. The Eleven Plus exam revealed that he could not even count to eleven and he became a mechanic, labourer, truck driver, boxer and poet. He read Wordsworth and Ford Cortina manuals in a lorry cab near both Oxford and Cambridge universities. He married a kind forgiving woman who eventually forgave herself for that one big mistake. He has several wonderful children and hopes that one day they will all meet. At the age of 25 he heard the music of Edith Piaf and learned to sing all her songs. A few years later he realised she was French and that he was an ugly swan not a beautiful duckling. The shock propelled him to London where he joined the Metropolitan Police. Car chases and riots followed but he did not take it personally. He spent his spare time touring the Art galleries, singing Piaf and learning Italian. Eventually The Authorities fell for the con and gave him a desk job in the Art department of Interpol London at Scotland Yard. One day a few years later, the lure of the wild swept him away to the roads of Europe as road gipsy trucker. His love of fried battered fish eventually drew him back to England where he drove sewage tankers and set up a taxi business. Throughout all this time he was a would be poet, short story writer and novelist. Always scribbling he sent waves of short stories to magazines and published poems via the National Poetry Foundation magazines.

5.0 out of 5 stars When Poetry Opens up New Windows on Life 26 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Oscar Sparrow is that special kind of poet who can make you forget your own world. He has a way with words and takes you into his fold, showing you not what he sees, but how he sees it. I found this collection of poems a joy - I say this not as a poet for I'm essentially a novelist who occasionally writes poems as so many novelists do (for example Tolkien). This is why I think I'm particularly well-equipped to judge poetry and I am convinced that whoever reads Oscar Sparrow's poems and listens to him as he reads them, will be carried away as I was.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy the joutney 18 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Reading this collection of fine poetry was rather like embarking on a journey with its twists and turns and ups and downs. The format is different and very readable and the subject matter is varied and fascinating to the point where feelings of nostalgia with 'Fashion Footwear' were engendered along with a variety of other emotions in other pieces. In other words Oscar Sparrow has the knack of engaging the reader in a few short lines. This collection will take you on a journey to familiar and unfamiliar places but you will be regally entertained throughout.
Well done Oscar - highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars And Exceptional Poetic Experience - the Magic of Words 9 Dec 2012
By Claude Nougat - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Anyone reading Oscar Sparrow's poems will be moved in two ways: by how it is written and how it is told. For this book comes with the audio (author reading), a wonderful experience!

A confession is in order: though I don't think of myself as a poet, I'm basically a fiction writer (and an economist), I have always loved poetry and dabbled in it, mainly because I love words. Actually I'm sure we all do, if only we could link back again to that first moment in life, for most of us in our teens, when we suddenly discovered that words were magic: the way they sound, the meanings, both openly expressed and hidden, echoes to deeper levels of our unconscious and, ultimately, windows on beauty and harmony.

That's what Oscar Sparrow's poetry makes you re-discover. The magic of words. Yet, like all great poets, he stays close to you, he uses everyday words, everyday events. He just makes you see your daily world in a different way. He starts with a situation - an event, a landscape - you know intimately and he takes you by the hand to an upper level.

Consider this, an excerpt from a longer poem:
...The meadow-
Whose beauty is of bog mud
The oozing in boots,
Of grubby handed boyhood
sharings,
A criminality of penny bangers,
A wing swoop of owl,
In a moon frost of tiny sufferings."

It starts by being right down to earth - "bog mud", "The oozing in boots" - and anyone who's walked in a rain-drenched meadow will have experienced the feeling. Then, suddenly it soars: " a moon frost of tiny sufferings". And the rythm of the words he has chosen accompany you like music.

This is the kind of soaring that makes for exceptional poetry!

5.0 out of 5 stars Words of magic! 29 July 2012
By Micheal Rivers - Author - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I placed a review of this book on Amazon when it was first released. By the magic of the winds it has vanished into the night. The words of Oscar Sparrow flow easily across the lips as they are read aloud. This is a book of poetry that should be enjoyed by everyone. If you enjoy fine poetry and the visions that are conjured by perfectly flowing prose this book is for you. This is a must read.
