It is Paris, 1793, 'the most seething time of that seething revolution. No one knew in the morning if his head would still be on his shoulders in the evening, or if it would be held up by citizen Samson the headsman, for the sansculottes of Paris to see.' However, the Scarlet Pimpernel, Sir Percy Blakeney, is still at large to rescue France's aristocrats.

About the Author

Baroness Orczy was born in Hungary in 1865, the daughter of Baron Felix Orczy, a landed aristocrat and well-known composer and conductor. Shemoved with her parents from Budapest to Brussels and then Paris, where she was educated. Orczy alsostudied art in London and exhibited work atthe Royal Academy. Later sheMontagu Barstow and together they worked as illustrators and jointly published an edition of Hungarian folk tales. Fame came in1905 with the publication of The Scarlet Pimpernel, which was originally a play co-written with her husband. Its background of Revolution in France and swashbuckling hero, 'Sir Percy Blakeney', was to prove immensely popular. Sequels followed and many years later film and TV versions are enduringly popular, with new productions from time to time. However, Orczy alsoalso wrote detective stories which have a following today amongst those intersted in the genre. She died in 1947.

It would have been very difficult to say why Citizen Deroulede was quite so popular as he was. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars I Will Repay 12 Mar 2014
I Will Repay by Baroness Orczy was first published on September 27th, 1906. The quotation the baroness chose for the novel is: “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” – Romans. Xii. 19.

Forced by an oath to take revenge on the duellist, who killed her brother in a sword fight, Juliette Marnay, daughter of the old Monsieur le Duc de Marny, will be at the mercy of the mob during the French Revolution. She will also be at the mercy of conflicting loyalites and emotions, which will lead to her arrest and death by “Madame” Guillotine, unless the intrepid Scarlet Pimpernel, Sir Percy Blakeney Bart rescues her and the man she loves.

The moderate Citizen Deputy Deroulede, the special favourite of the unpredictable Parisian mob well-knows the pride of her caste and of her party, and how much she despises him a partisan of the squalid mob of France. Against his will he loves Juliette.

Over a hundred years ago authors described passion in terms other than those familiar today. When Deroulede declares his love for Juliette the baroness wrote: “He pressed his lips upon her hand, upon the soft palm and delicate writst, his burning kisses bearing witness to the tumultuous passion which his reverence for her was holding in check.”

I like both Juliette and Deroulede, but at one point could not imagine how they, and Deroulede’s mother and an orphan they took care of, would escape, although I had every confidence in The Scarlet Pimpernel’s ingenuity.

The first in the series about Sir Percy Blakeney and his gallant band of men became the blockbuster of its era and the sequels also had many fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthy episode in the series 6 Nov 2002
This is one of the shorter books in the series and it unusual in that the Scarlet Pimpernel and his league barely feature. Twenty chapters into the book (there are just over thirty), the pimpernel has appeared in only a couple of chapters and there have been no references to any other individual members of the league.
You might think that this would make the book less interesting. You would be wrong. I've barely been able to put the book down. The main characters in the story are wonderfully rounded and it is a great tale of how loyalty to one's family can so easily be tested by love and loyalty to another person.

Completes my otherwise old & hardback collection.
I would never have found a hard copy. Which wouldn't have matched the others.
