this is the download only dub album of 'i-surrection', which was itself half a dub album - so plenty dub, then. plenty good dub. this is as good a dub album to come out of the uk for years, and an excellent companion to the above album from last year. uniquely composed of dave 'oldwah' sanford's hard driving and inventive dubs of the 6 vocal tracks from 'i-surrection, his treatment of 4 further tracks from the original album sessions, and 2 altrnative mixes of vocal tracks. so, if you have both albums, you will have 4 versions of 'hey yout'' and 'season for freeman', which is no bad thing as they are all distinctly differing from each other.
oldwah's versions of the vocal tracks are excellent, and take a firm 'old school' approach, creating a very authentic 'jamaican' sound, while preserving the urgency of the uk reggae sound. original, varied, and to be applauded.
unusual step taken in releasing new material in dub, ahead of the originals, but this works too, and shows a measure of confidence, as well as very good tunes. both the alt. mixes are superb also, 'hey yout' being perhaps the most immediate song on i-surrection, is very pliable and well suited to version. 'season for freeman' not far behind.
this is a fine piece of work, both in tandem with the original album, or as a stand alone set. uk reggae remains in good health.
