Product Description

Heartbroken Tess Tennant is leaving London and moving back to her picture-perfect home town to take up a teaching job. It's time for a fresh start, one with warm stone cottages, friendly locals in oak-beamed pubs and of course Adam, her best friend since childhood, who never left Langford. But something isn't right in the town: Adam is preoccupied with a new girlfriend and the past - which Tess thought she'd put behind her - is looming large again. So by the time she has to take her class on a trip to Rome, Tess is feeling reckless. She is swept off her feet by a mysterious stranger, and finds herself falling in love. But her magical Roman Holiday is about to turn into a nightmare! Back in Langford, as autumn creeps towards Christmas, Adam is gone and everything has changed.Tess has to decide, once and for all, where she belongs and with. Rich, witty and moving, I Remember You is for anyone who likes to dream about a new life -- and for anyone who still remembers their first love.

Tess Tennant leaves London after breaking up with her boyfriend and losing her job, returning to the village where she grew up. There she is brought back together with Adam, her best friend from childhood, who has never left the village. But can they ever retrieve the easy friendship they once shared - or have too many secrets in their past come between them?

I'm not a great fan of chick-lit as the ditzy, accident-prone girls always irritate me. This doesn't follow that trajectory as Tess and Adam are 30, but this is still a book which shows more promise than it actually delivers. There are lots of issues that are started up which aren't followed through on: the development of the village which seems to get forgotten about for ages; Tess' vacillating over London vs. village life; whether she really wants to be a Classics teacher or not; the family backstories that feel artificially inserted...

At heart, the relationship between Tess and Adam is sometimes deeper than we might be accustomed to in this genre and that's what kept me reading. Having said that, it kind of peaks mid-way through the book so that the end is a bit of a washout and anti-climax.

So I enjoyed this in a light kind of way but felt that it could have been far better if Evans had thought about it more - bits feel half-written and in need of a good revision to pull it all together in a more emotionally satisfying way.

Disappointing 4 Mar 2011

I have to agree with fellow reviewers who said they didn't care about any of the characters. I found Tess bland and unlikeable and Adam was a total idiot. Peter was faintly creepy. Not happy - like others I thought it was going to be a lovely easy read and it was heavy going on the detail and left em caring only about finishing the wretched thing rather than caring what happened.

I love Harriet Evans and when I heard she had a new book out I had to get it. I got the hardback version, which has to be one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen.
But, the story was all a bit of a let down to be honest. Characters I didn't particularly like (and couldn't give a damn about) and a story which I could see straight through.
There were too many errors (playing with a fork when the table hadn't even been set; a meeting that was happening that night and then it was next week), unrealistic parts (meeting Peter - purlease; Tess drinking a pint of bitter when she is supposed to be this 'refined classics teacher and calling Adam 'bruv'-aargh!; unrealistic speech; and the most annoying of all, Adam going from calling Tess darling to love?!).
There was far too much to keep up with and endless descriptions of Rome (I've never been so I don't actually know that the Trevi fountain is down a street, turn left, go up a hill etc...but I don't actually care!). It was all just to much. I accept that we need some background description, but this is just sily and detracts from the story.
I think this one was a bit of a flop and Miss Evan's other offerings are head and shoulders above this. I just worry that if this was the first book of hers I'd ever read, I wouldn't pick up another one.

Bit of a let down
I have to agree with others that there is not enough plot to justify the length of this book; everything from Part 2 onwards seems pointless. Read more

Not as good as I had hoped!
A nice read, but a long one! The story is good, just perhaps a little too much detail for me. I got this book as it was on a top-seller's list in a well-known magasine. Read more
