Product Description

Book Description
For the many readers of No Tears: Tales from the Square Mile, this second collection of David Charters' short stories will not disappoint. I Love You... and Other Lies focuses on the most perplexing of all relationships - marriage. Or rather - the broken marriage. There are still David Charters' trademark tales of low financial cunning, but this time, his canvas is wider with an even more darker edge to it. From divorced fathers cooking hamburgers for low pay in the vengeful New World of alimony payments to the crazed New York banker rampaging down Madison Avenue, this collection will delight his existing fans and is sure to gain him many more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant sequel, 18 Mar 2004
By Rupert Sterling (London, UK) - See all my reviews
Having thoroughly enjoyed "No Tears" and its portrayal of life in the City of London, the prospect of more stories from David Charters proved irresistible. Although they deal with relationships rather than the financial world, David Charters' brilliant twists and turns surprise and shock in equal measure - the scary thing is that the situations he writes about are all too real. I thoroughly recommend it for anyone who wants to understand the modern relationship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't read this on your honeymoon, 16 Mar 2004
By A Customer
I bought Charters's first book, No Tears, partly because I'd worked in the City long ago and was interested to see how well he'd captured it, and partly out of a different sort of curiosity - everyone says short stories don't sell. On the first count he blew me away - this was the sharpest (in both senses) fictional portrait of the City I'd ever read. The perfect blend between authentically capturing the pitiably prosaic everyday life there and the heady whiff of kerosene whenever the big money works its personality-warping alchemy. As to sales, he has kicked every preconception into the long grass, and the printers must have got numb fingers keeping up with presses.

Now he moves on to marriage, and boy will this one create a stir. It's not that the stories are really darker, they just feel that way. After all, bankers we love to hate, and if they get their come-uppance, who cares? But schadenfreude doesn't work so well when the target is most of us. These tales make it hard not to look your own marriage in the mirror, and wonder how you or your other half would behave if they whole thing unravelled. If Charters is right, the answer is probably badly - so badly that you would wonder whether you ever really knew that person at all. Brilliant, hugely funny stuff, then, and possible for reading on the eve of your nuptials, if you're teh sort that likes to keep your options open till the last minute. But don't under any circumstances take this book on your honeymoon - if you're spouse even sees you've got it, you're in big trouble

5.0 out of 5 stars Real masterpiece!, 17 Mar 2004
What a wonderful book! Really exceptional! Describes in a very nice, witty and humane way the painful process of divorce and separation! Characters are people 'next door' with passions and weaknesses and all share the same goal: finding happiness and emotional balance. David Charters once more proves that he masters the art of human psychic and describes in a unique way a story that will touch your heart! Highly recommended!
