5.0 out of 5 stars A gem 28 Jan 2010
By Mr. Dc Fowler VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
The book tells the story of the great Leonardo's life from cradle to grave accompanied by the atmospheric and often very funny illustrations of Ralph Steadman. I am not sure how accurate the text is - if it is da Vinci's actual words or not from the Italian - but the text holds a veracity, almost childlike, that makes me think it is. Ralph Steadman's observational style serves very well to put the words in context, sometimes in a very revealing way. All the pictures are wonderfully executed but my favourite page is the description of da Vinci's despair at (we suppose they are cats) "small domestic animals" refusing to stay outside the door but preferring to keep near the fire and the illustration (definitely not PC) of the catapult he uses to ensure their absence is lengthier. I bought this book back in the eighties and still thumb through it regularly. One of my top 50 books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, intelligent, and believable as an autobiography of the master himself, Leonardo da Vinci 10 Nov 2007
By Carol Klavon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I read this book some years ago, and was very amused by the format of storytelling. If da Vinci had ever written his own biography, I imagine it would be very much along the lines of Mr. Steadman's version of the events in Leonardo's life. Hilarious, gross, intelligent, and with fantastic illustrations throughout. Considering Leonardo da Vinci's fascination with caricatures in his own art, he would definitely love this book.
