Product Description

Review

"'A spankingly good story about Matilda, whom the legends call gentle but she calls a good deal more' THE SPECTATOR; 'Matilda, wife to William the Conqueror, is painstakingly depicted through her deflowering, marriage, much child-bearing, some jealous violence and repentance... well documented historical fiction' THE OBSERVER; 'The private life of William the Conqueror and his wife Matilda of Flanders... convincingly worked out, and the historical background carefully painted in' THE DAILY TELEGRAPH. 'Mrs Lewis is not only mistress of her subject, but has the power to vitalise it' THE DAILY TELEGRAPH; 'Well documented historical fiction' THE OBSERVER; 'Hilda Lewis is a born storyteller' THE YORKSHIRE POST."

Format: Paperback
I received this book as a Christmas present. I've never really read much of Jacqueline before, other than I knew that she had married against the wishes of her relatives to Humphrey, Duke of gloucester, uncle to the king, Henry vi of England. I found this book to be well written, rich in descriptives of the courts and surroundings. Jacqueline has a tragic and quite unhappy life until she finally reaches her fourth marriage. She is imprisoned several times, stripped of her titles, her land, her wealth and her possessions, all of which is done at the hands of her bitter enemies who just happen to be her closest relatives also. Still, she manages to stay strong and keep optimistic. I found Jacqueline's story, told by Hilda Lewis, to be an inspiration. It's worth reading, definitely. If, like me, you enjoy historical fiction, then you'll find this book a breath of fresh air. It's lovely to read about somebody different for a change and also someplace different.
