Born and brought up in Chicago, Joan Viskant began singing in the clubs of her hometown before relocating, first to France and then to London. Continuing her vocal career in Europe, she received encouragement from Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, as well as the respect of many other influential jazz musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Ray Charles and Betty Carter. Since her move to the UK she had been in great demand as a jazz performer.
