Nia Vardalos writes, directs and stars in this Manhattan-set romantic comedy. 40-something florist Genevieve Gernier (Vardalos) has had a tricky time with love. In order to avoid the complications and risks she associates with lasting relationships, she has devised a rule for herself that she may have no more than five dates with a man. However, her trusted edict is put to the test when she meets Greg Gatlin (John Corbett), a handsome restaurateur who sets up a new business near her shop.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mmmmm . . . 18 Feb 2010
OK, am a Nia Vardalos and John Corbett fan. Yes, I said it. I really enjoyed My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Nia Vardalos's other new film Driving Aphrodite (or My Life In Ruins - dependent on which side of the pond you reside).

This film left me feeling a little bit . . . well . . . is that it? The basic storyline is good and enjoyable in an easy-going sort of way. However, I just felt like there could have been more to it than that. I felt a little disappointed.

Nia Vardalos plays a florist shop owner who, in order to avoid being dumped and being hurt, has a rule that going out with a guy should only last for 5 dates. After the 5th date, it's over. She meets a gorgeous restaurant owner (John Corbett) who tries to follow her philosophy on dating, but things get a little complicated when they start falling for each other - that's the bare bones.

All-in-all a good film, funny in parts and lots of potential that it doesn't quite live up to.

Or maybe I just need to watch it again??

2.0 out of 5 stars Romance by numbers 18 Sep 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This film from writer/director/star Nia Vardalos, who reunites with her 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' co-star John Corbett, is a real let-down, utterly failing to recapture the charm and freshness of the pair's earlier movie.

The premise itself has a great deal of promise for the rom-com genre. A woman, damaged by her parents' divorce and determined not to allow any man to hurt her as her father had hurt her mother, develops a 'foolproof' method for ensuring her continuing happiness by limiting all of her romances up front to 5 dates and absolutely never allowing herself to have a relationship. This way, she enjoys all the fun of the romance, stays on good terms with the men she has dated, and never gets into the messy stuff. All is working swimmingly, until she meets a really cute man who is a bit clueless when it comes to the rules of male-female interactions.

Despite the promising set-up, the characters are extremely broad (formulaic to the point of poorly-done caricature) and underdeveloped. In part, the lack of plot/character development can be attributed to the extremely short run-time of the film (only 86mins by the end of the credits) - combined with the fact that there are too many sub-plot threads for any of them to achieve a satisfactorily convincing resolution.

Much of the main romance plot hinges around a disagreement between the central characters over whether they have had 4 or 5 dates. Vardalos's character, florist Genevieve, maintains that it was 4 dates and becomes upset when love interest Greg (Corbett) fails to contact her for Date 5. Greg, however, maintains that by staying together for a second night following Date 4, the couple had had their 5th and agreed final date.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nia Vardalos 27 May 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Hi There,
I liked her earlier work and thought that this would be on par but it is not and I think it is because she is staring and producing this film.Too much of the camera is on her and not equally shared with the other actors which has led to a lack of the previous chemistry that was present in my fat Greek wedding. It is a shame because you do get the odd flash of what this film could have been but wasn`t, I think if there had been someone who used the story in a different way she would have had another hit.

Generally speaking I love Nia Vardalos. Driving Aphridite and MBFGW are two of my favourite all time films. This however? Not so much. Meh.
