The full-length debut of Cologne-based avant-funk pioneer Oliver Braun betrays more than a hint of the deconstructing tendencies of the European underground (see also the likes of Pole, Sofa Surfers, and Bernd Friedmann). In spite of its complex stylings, there's a light touch to such efforts as "The Great Krautrock Swindle" and "Jamaika Fractal" that ensures Beige's flagrant genre-mashing rarely gets caught up in difficult pretension. Braun is au fait with the mutant wobble of acid house, the abstract structural design of intelligent techno, and the polished sheen of chart-friendly P-funk--when each genre collides at speed, 'I Don't Either' comes into its own. Beware, though, the occasional pointless excursion, such as '12A prt.07-2', which proves that such musical experiments are best conducted in sight of a full dance floor--Louis Pattison

press reviews:
Album Of The Month, de:bug, Germany

"deeply technological but... raises its cap to house, dub, hip hop and funk. Playful and innovative" XLR8R

"as tight as Bootsy's codpiece and as fanciful as George Clinton's views on space travel" Muzik

"Imagine the futuristic, clicks and cuts of the Mille Plateaux stable, infused with the 'ants in your pants' philosophy of P-Funk" Xfade

"Warning: don't try dancing to it, your pelvis will implode" Sleazenation

"wonderful fun" Melody Maker

"has a warmth and catchiness that lingers. Alluring right through to the end" 7

"an impressive collection of futuristic funk... these tracks positively ooze with it" Wax

"Inspirational beat programming" Top

"a true delight....redefining minimal electronica" Overload

"In common with Pole, Beige's debut relocates what is essentially house music to some far distant galaxy" Q, 3/5
