Biography

After countless forays into the western world, Youssou N'Dour chose Dakar as a base from which to lead his geopolitical campaign in music. His strategy is pan-African: "What all of us Africans share is much more important than what we don't share," says this elegant, fifty-year old youngster, who grew up in the Medina in Senegal's capital city, Dakar. Bringing unity to the African continent has… Read more in Amazon's Youssou N'Dour Store

Product Description

CD Description

Nonesuch presents the soundtrack from the critically acclaimed documentary about African superstar Youssou N'Dour, I Bring What I Love. The album features all-new recordings of music from throughout N'Dour's career as well as two new songs, including the documentary's title theme, written by N'Dour, Martin Davich and the film's composer James Newton Howard. The soundtrack to the stirring film by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi richly represents the music and the message of N'Dour the artist and the humanitarian.

With his 2004 Nonesuch release Egypt, N'Dour won rave reviews around the globe. For the album, N'Dour collaborated with Egyptian composer Fathy Salama to create music in praise of the major figures of Senegalese Sufi Islam. Ironically, the album was met with worldwide critical acclaim yet lambasted in Senegal, where it was seen as blasphemous for a pop star to sing of such sacred things. Public sentiment in the artist's home country changed, however, when the album was awarded the 2005 Grammy for best Contemporary World Music Album, a first for both N'Dour and Senegal.

Award-winning filmmaker Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi was on hand for the duration of this turbulent period of N'Dour's career, documenting the singer's personal, musical, and spiritual journey. Vasarehelyi was first inspired by the power of N'Dour's music and message. "I was drawn most of all to the hope Youssou creates," she said, continuing: "Although his is one of the most popular voices coming out of Africa, many people around the world still don't know his work. So I wanted to make a film that would illuminate Youssou's life and his message for others to discover."

The resulting film, Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love, was premiered at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival to rave reviews. Now magazine called it "brilliant," praising Vasarhelyi's "ability to keep a tight grip on the narrative through many turns without losing sight of the central figure or the essential human element," while Rolling Stone dubbed it one of five essential rock movies at the Toronto International Film Festival.

A key element of Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love is the music itself. The Washington Post remarked that, within the film, "the most powerful element is N'Dour's lone voice, a thing of high, pure beauty that feels at once ancient and new." The Chicago Tribune agreed, saying "N'Dour's piercing brilliance as a singer, and the irresistible Afro-Caribbean beat of his band's compositions, bring the issues home." That irresistible music is featured on Music From I Bring What I Love, including live and studio performances of compositions drawn from throughout N'Dour's illustrious career, as well as two new songs: the title track and "Yonnent (The Messenger)," a moving duet with Moustapha Mbaye, known in Senegal as "the Prophet's Griot." These two tracks illustrate the source of N'Dour's success--he has reached out to the world while remaining true to Africa, Senegal, and his humanitarian message. In the words of the Chicago Sun-Times, "N'Dour is the sort of humanitarian bridge that we need in a world so sharply divided."

I'm lovin' it! 12 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
A bit of a dodgy start with piano and keyboards and some soppy flute - perhaps it works better as a soundtrack? The vocals are very clear which is the only real plus point.
Then we're off into a wonderful bubbling tama (talking drum) and the familiar sound of Immigres with 8 backing singers including Viviane N'dour, Seun Anikulapo Kuti and Julia Sarr. The whole of the album is a 'best of' with acoustic and/or live versions of Youssou's songs.
There's a wonderful laid back version of Birima with Cheikh Lo amongst the backing singers and some lovely gentle percussive keyboards and acoustic guitar.
Yonnet has some nice kora and balafon, a touch too much soft keyboards, but is topped off by the wonderful textured voice of Mustapha Mbaye trading lines with Youssou.
There are a couple of great tracks from the 'Egypt' album with full Arabic string orchestra. The recording is really detailed and you can listen right in to the different strings of the orchestra and kora, counter balanced by the trilling flute. Mame Bamba starts slowly with an intro on oud and then some English vocals by Youssou before the orchestra, percussion and chorus come in with the catchy tune of Touba Daru Samba.
There are some great sing-along-a tracks like Atou Reer Na, Xel and Li Ma Weesu. The CD ends with an overly syrupy version of New Africa - I think it's probably the obviously emotional end to the film for the Americans!
Overall this is a great CD - however for me the soft keyboards are a little annoying at times. The best aspect is the softer acoustic setting that really gives Youssou the space to sing beautifully without competing with crashing sabars, electric guitars and horn section.

THE LION OF SENEGAL 7 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The music and voice of Youssou N'dour can be very emotional when the spirits combine, this is a part studio and live a lbum and is every bit as good as we have come to expect from Ndour.
The bulk of the album seems to extend from his magnificenT "Egypt" album with its atmospheric string arrangements
buy this album and enjoy hearing the heart of Senegals lion roar in full flight.

Format:Audio CD
The authenticity of the soundtrack "I Bring What I Love" to transcend language and cultural barriers reveals itself in the miraculous way your appendages react with joy infested rhythm that is a trademark of Youssou N'Dour's artistry. Songs of tranquillity, celebration and inspiration of the highest order make this album a must buy. There is nothing boring about this compilation of vibes designed to carry the film documentary "I Bring What I Love" into the deepest recesses of your appreciation of fine art. It is a musical adventure that brings one closer to understanding Africa in a beautiful and respectful context, for surely anyone creating a soundtrack this magnificent and consistent must be nurtured in an environment that has the musical and spiritual tools to surmount negativity. I recommend the soundtrack "I Bring What I Love" to anyone wishing to get the most for their money and enhance one's appreciation of world cultures and excellent music. Senegal (a West African nation) is truly blessed to have an ambassador as legendary as Youssou N'Dour to represent its gifts of spirituality and music to the world. Sincerely, Shadeed R. Ahmad (4-25-10)
