This CD, following on from Worry Bomb and A World Without Dave, proves that Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine were more than two punks with a drum machine and a sampler.

This is Carter's most musicaly accomplished album, and unfortunately marked the end of the band. Unlike the early LPs which consisted of Jim Bob, Fruitbat and a click track, this recording see the band as a fully fledged seven piece with live drums (courtesy of Wez) , acoustic guitars and a real piano. Gosh!

Despite the downbeat tone of the CD, the lyrics are as incisive as ever and there are even one or two punk numbers for longtime fans.

Pick of the tracks - Closedown.

This turned out to be Carter's last album and, to be honest, you wish they'd gone out on a bit of a better note. The whole reason I fell in love with them as a 13-year-old unashamed fraggle fan in the early '90s was the sheer energy of their music but here they really sound like they're treading water with a lot of the songs sounding like watered down retreads of earlier better stuff. There's the odd exception like "Growing Old Disgracefully" and the stark piano ballad "Girls Can Keep A Secret" but all in all, if you're interested in hearing some USM stuff (and there's no reason why you shouldn't) check out "101 Damnations" and "30 Something" to catch them at their livewire bile-spitting best.

Why?...Just...Why? 17 Feb 2010

This sounds like a band dying.
A last desperate, flailing stab in a totally new direction, to try and massage the heart of the thing into surviving for a another go round.
Of course there's nothing wrong with experimentation, but this is so far removed in style and spirit you question if the Trades Descriptions act should be broadened to include such things.
OK.. On it's own it's not a terrible album I guess, It's just not anything to do with why you loved Carter USM in the first place (as my learned colleague states above ;)
For completest fans only.
