Amazon.co.uk Review

Anyone fearing that Tim Burgess releasing a solo album might spell the end of the Charlatans can rest easy. I Believe isn't that kind of solo album. Rather than a bid for freedom, it's a side project in the old fashioned sense, written as much for his own amusement as commercial gain. Essentially, he's scratching an itch, namely his affection for America's west coast. A long-time LA resident, he's finally succumbed to Californian sunshine and his romantic road-movie fantasies. "I Believe in the Spirit"--part Exile on Main Street era Rolling Stones, part Lenny Kravitz circa Let Love Rule--is made for barrelling down an eight-lane freeway in a vintage convertible with the top down. "We All Need Love" and the shimmering acoustics of "Be My Baby" brim with cowboy pathos. "Held in Straps" is a Tex-Mex border skirmish with a ghoulish rock chug. With the breezily throwaway "Say Yes"--practically the Four Tops' "Loco in Acapulco"--followed by the wistful mariachi waltz "Love to Spend the Night with You", it's definitely not the Charlatans territory. However, unlike most hobby projects, I Believe isn't just for the dedicated fan. Loaded with charm and endearing melodies, it's a curiously lovable album. --Dan Gennoe

I went to see the stereophonics as a couple of reviewers had and he was supporting and did a real stand up job of it so I bought this CD. I've seen a couple of albums saying they "feared" it'd be a bit of a charlatans spin off, and though I think the Charlatans are a top band this is nothing like what I've heard from them.

It's a really uplifting, summery album that just sticks you in a good mood. As tempted as I am to say it could be stuck into a more poppy genre than his earlier work with the band, I've not heard anything quite like it.

Its an easy listening album that you'll listen to again and again so go get it man, you'll love it sitting in the summer sun with a cool glass of lager.

As a fan of the charlatans i was looking forward to the release of this album every since i heard about it. I've got to say i was not disappointed!. This is an amazing album which i will never tire of listening to. To me this defines the summer feeling with melodies and lyrics that you will instantly fall in love with. I got this album as soon as it came out (last year) and it feels fresh every time i listen to it. A great album from a man which will continue to amaze me with his heartfelt lyrics and knack for a great tune. This album is Tim Burgess through and through and is therefore a joyous, uplifting album which has something for everyone.

I have to disagree somewhat with Alistair from Glasgow's review on Sir Tim's debut solo effort. Granted, it's different from anything The Charlatans have ever done, with the slight exception being the continuation of Tim's falsetto vocals that were apparent on Wonderland. But if Tim wanted to do a Charlatans album then he quite easily could have - instead he has opted for an expression of his own musical tastes and influences (of which strangely include Twiggy Ramirez alongside the Beach Boys and John Lennon according to the notes on the sleeve). From the introduction of the single 'I Believe' (which sounds remarkably like the music used by Sacha Baron Cohen's character Borat) it is obvious that we are in for something different. The rest of the album doesn't disappoint either, with standout tracks 'Only a Boy' and 'Oh My Corazon' warming the heart and uplifting the soul. If it's The Charlatans sound that you're after then this album is probably not for you. But if you want to hear one of the most underated British musical talents mixing his influences and sharing it with the world then you could do a lot worse than buying this album. The only disappointment with this fine offering is that we don't have a Pacific Coast Highway in England to cruise along at 40 mph with the top down. I guess the M25 will have to do for the time being.
