Product Description

Product Description

This book (which is heartbreaking, angry, and downright funny) could have been named Islam 101 by a Practising Imperfect Muslim, or Sex and the Burqa, or Islam and Black Magic. Dina Zaman meets shamans, (race and religious) facists, sexual athletes (her interview with a hijab-clad lesbian is priceless) and gets into all sorts of scrapes in her bid to understand the bizarre nature of Islam in Malaysia (the good Muslim country according to Western media). After the publication of I am Muslim in 2007, Dina Zaman was inundated with bouquets for daring to speak out, and subjected to harassment and threats of bodily harm to her (often of a sexual nature) and her family.

Eventhough it is not super well writen, it is a good portrait of the Malay society and I would recommend everybody to read it.
In my case, I do not speak malay so there where a lof of things that I didn't understand, she leaves a lot of malay words and does not translate them. Maybe the paper edition has foot-notes but the Kindle edition doesn't so there where A LOT of things I didn't get... :-(
