Cormier is in dangerously fine form in this excellent book. His uncompromising and sometimes traumatic prose makes for a thriller that is at once terrifying and compulsive as it races towards its shocking climax, leaving as many questions unanswered at the end of the book as at the beginning. --Susan Harrison --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
The book is about intense shrink sessions where Adam recovers his past to Brint and causes him to have breakdowns and take medication. It seems as though Adam is in a sanatorium and he is being analysed by Brint for a specific reason.
Some of the themes in the book would be fear, in how Adam encounters many fearful experiences throughout the book. Another theme is espionage in the way the book is very confidential and many bits of information are not clearly explained and it makes you think yourself.
The climax is filled with suspense and leaves you guessing until the last few pages. It is quite an exciting climax and makes up for the middle of the novel which can be bland and quite ho-hum.
I found this book very interesting. Even though it was not so suspense filled during the centre of the novel, it made up for it in the end with such a surprise of an ending, you will never pick it!
Written By: Robert Butchatsky
This novel is complex, inventive, highly bizarre, and totally suspenseful. From the very start to the chilling end, this book keeps you turning the pages in order to find out the truth. Highly recommended.
The main themes and issues being adressed in this novel are fear, trust and reality-versus-appearance. Adam seems to be scared of everything; open and closed spaces, spiders, dogs, bullies, the 'never-knows' and a long list of other 'phobias'. Adam doesn't know who to trust, the only people he can feel vaguely trusting to, is his family and even they didn't reveal the truth to him until he worked it out for himself.
