Government Health Warning! Zen Baseballbat can make you addicted to Ska!

Saw the band live...thought what a great sound, new , crisp , and so refreshingly British Ska!.

The next day I bought the album , well I'd be stupid not to.

The thing is... Zen Baseballbat are what every thirty something wishes they had been , a band with such great aura , they sound like The Specials meets Space with a bit of heavy brass thrown in...all in all dancable ska that will appeal to the masses.

The band themselves hail from the Widnes/Runcorn area of the North West...a heavy industrial area which seems to have been conveniently forgotten by the Governments of past and Present, this is reflected in their lyrics.

There are pop/ska gems on this album like like the title track "I am the champion concrete mixer",which tells the tale of Gleavy at school, then there is "Matching Houses", this masterpiece describes the goings on in the massive housing estates in Runcorn and Widnes where most of the band come from. Everyone who lives on these estates have the same type of houses,do the same things, like holidaying in Ibiza, and everyone knows everyone elses buisness.

I would reccomend this album to anyone, ska fan or not, because it has something for everyone!

If you don't buy it then at least make the effort to see them live,You'll be very glad you did!...Oh yes!, if you buy this album, and become addicted (you will), Great News!... new album due out, very very soon!

Keep Skankin' 3rd wave ska is here...and it doesn't come any better than Zen Baseballbat!

I first saw "Brown Cows.." on P-Rock and was intrigued by the band's use of regional accents instead of the usual "American Rock Voice" - brilliant.
Saw them live a few weeks later in a tiny venue and was hooked ! I bought this album and it didn't dissapoint. If you love intelligent lyrics and great tunes - this for you. imagine Morrissey writing for Less Than Jake !

If your head is like a malleted stump......buy this.

I really like ths record by a band from the Widnes area of the North West. They manage to capture a lifestyle. Their music is uplifting and meaningful. I first came across this band due to a friend who had recorded an NWA (North Western Arts) Documentary made about them by Granada TV. In this you see Ray Pye get his photo taken with Chickens as boxing gloves, the picture which appears on the front of the album, and hear about his fight with warts. The music they played during the programme made me have to see them, to get more. I went to several gigs and they were the best I've been to. They were small and intimate, and they've always won over the crowd with their use of catchy hooks, both with lyrics and the brass section.

The songs seem to be about growing up in a working class area, the terraced houses, holdays in Ibiza and Abergele, and being undervalued because of where you come from. The best song i think is 'An Ode to Purple Acky.' The best line "I offered them the services of Marcel Duchamp / they gave me the post of lavatory attendent" from 'Signed off R. Mutt.'

This album never fails to cheer me up. Give it a try, you know you want to.
