For the majority of people keen to master the great art of fly fishing one of the best starting points has to be on stillwater. With so much information to take on board, from rods and reels right through to flies, a well stocked lake at a managed fishery will help you to gain the experience and confidence you need to tackle more testing conditions. Along with a good location you will also require a well-qualified guide, and theres no one better than fly casting champion, the highly respected instructor Hywel Morgan, to show you how it should be done. This programme is packed full of top tips from Hywel, including picking the right tackle, basic casting techniques and deciding which flies are appropriate at any given moment, ensuring that youll be catching fish in record time. Then it will simply be a case of practice making perfect, as a whole lifetime of angling pleasure awaits you, whether at the lakeside or as you progress, along the river bank.

I bought this after catching one of Hywel's programmes on TV. Based on the programme I expected it to be good and it is; very helpful to a fly fishing novice, with plenty of casting tips that more experienced fishermen could probably benefit from. Even the sections on fly tying, which appears quite daunting to a beginner, make the subject seem accessible and do-able. Great value.

This DVD pulled together everything that I'd read or been told during the beginners fly fishing lessons I'd been on. It's entertaining enough to watch a few times and pick up something new each viewing, I particularly like the entomology piece he does on these DVD's.

This DVD is aimed at beginnners intended as an introduction to fly fishing, a no-nonsense approach is taken and the man sounds convincing enough at first glance. However, if you've got at least a rudimentary knowledge of fly fishing, you'll realise however that it lacks information in many areas touched upon and dedicates a disproportionate amount of time to (to a beginner). About a third of the DVD is dedicated to fly-making - far more than that dedicated to fly casting, which I found disappointing, I realy think fly-making is something only a more advanced angler should consider, most beginners and even intermediates would be happy to buy ready-made flies, however if you'd like to know how to make the Cat's Whisker and the Peacock's Spider flies and have all the equipment necessary, then by all means buy this DVD. Furthermore, there wasn't any mention of the fishing environment i.e. the water systems/terrain/fish habitat, which given the title "stillwater" was misleading, the title could have equally been called "start fly fishing", the "stillwater" being a redundant term here.

On the positive, there are useful pieces of advice here and there - a sophisticated method of tying the leader to the line is one example. There's also great entertainment in places, the DVD is peppered with trout catches and dreary music.

There are better DVDs for beginners out there, this one is too short and compressed and lacking in fudamental areas such as fly casting. If you were hoping to be informed on the basics of stillwater fly fishing, you'd be sourly disappointed. Don't buy this DVD, better to buy a DVD dedicated to only to one concept e.g. fly-casting/fishing environment/fly-making, because this DVD at most provides you with only a flavour of those.

I have been fly fishing for 5 years now and I and never really had a teacher/mentor to show me how and why certain casts, flys etc were used. This DVD although for beginners helps the more experienced fly fisherman understand those gaps in their knowledge, I just wish I could look at the DVD by the waterside!
