5.0 out of 5 stars Cool, sleek and very sexy, 5 Jan 2003
I initially had qualms about buying from a not really heard of company such as Hyun Wan, I very nearly went with a Creative MP3 player with a lot less memeory and features. I'm very Glad I didn't in the end, the Gemboy is simply the best MP3 player I've seen in its price range. Its mainly super cool features are:

1. Its tiny! Not quite as small as the 64mb cigrette lighter size Creative MuVo, but thats because it includes many more worthwile features. Ideal for use when jogging.

2. MMC Port- the player is upgradable form its original huge 128mb via a MMC slot, Giving this player a max. capacity of 256mb!

3. The player has a flip-up LCD display that reads the ID3's off MP3's and the equivalent from WMA's.

4. The Player has an adjustable equiliser setting, 4 Play modes and many more built in features. The internal software recognises WMA's and MPŁ's, and the codecs are upgradable.

5. Finally, it comes with a biult in voice recorder for upto 4 hours of dictation, whch can subseqeuntly be converted into .wav format via the software provided.

The actual software provided is marvellous, the only annoying thing is that the files enter the MP3 Player in the order that they are inputted into the Program, there's no way of changing it. Using Windows Media Player Series 9, you have to go to the Hyun Won Website to download the new driver, but once that is done, it works like a gem.

A must for all music enthusiasts!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality, 17 Feb 2003
By M. Dovey "Son of Santa" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had an MP3 player around a year and a half now, but it was a somewhat old one bought in a sale - so old, it used the parallel port, and you had to change settings in BIOS before uploading files. Needless to say, this player is somewhat of an improvement on that...
I upgraded to this for the simple reason my old player didn't like WinXP. The first thing you notice about this player is the size - it's stupidly tiny. This was an important fact for me, as I like to take my MP3 player everywhere, so a clunky CD/MP3 player was out of the question. Installation of the software is as simple as can be. Then the uploading of files... perhaps I have a somewhat biased view from using my old MP3 player, but this seemed amazingly quick and easy to use. It simply plugs into the USB port; you then load up the program, drag and drop the MP3 files you want, re-arranging them as you wish, then click the "send" button to send them to your player. It takes probably around 5 minutes to upload 2 hours of music into the player - a LOT quicker than I'm used to.
The player itself is great quality - I encode my MP3's at 128kbps, as this compresses it to around 1Mb/min of play (hence 2 hours with this MP3 player). Although technically MP3's are inferior to CD tracks, you can't tell this just by listening. A good idea with MP3 players is to get some good quality earphones - ones that are supplied never seem to be too great...
128mb is plenty of memory - you can easily fit three albums onto it - but this can be pushed up to 4 hours of play with 256mb if wanted. I find that this isn't needed - with it being so simple to upload files, it's just as easy to just upload different songs whenever I need (my main reason for not going with a MiniDisc player - I can change files whenever I want with this). Although the lid is, yes, somewhat flimsy (a mere thin sheet of plastic), you will only break it if you act like a retard with it - take care with the player and you'll be fine.
If you want to use it, the player comes with a neck-string so it can be worn around the neck - and it is small enough for this to be viable. This could perhaps be handy for jogging etc. when pockets are in short supply, though I wouldnt know :)
All in all, although this isn't a well known brand name, the price, quality and features make this an excellent player.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good starter Mp3., 29 Dec 2002
By Thomas Leivers (Birmingham., West Midlands United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The player itself is good, its small, lightweight and its square design means its easy to slip into a pocket. The 'flip lid' seems abit flimsy but once opened the Display has everything on show for you. Even telling you the song title. Downloading songs onto it is extremly easy, within minutes i had filled up the 128mb of memory. I like the idea of adding memory ontop of the on-board memory, that will no doubt be useful later on.
The buttons are not a problem to deal with. they are sturdy and easy to press. The hold button is useful when i carry it around.
In conclusion, being an MP3 rookie, this player has everything i need, although its probably not for the established mp3 user. The easy to use softare and the simple design make this a Very substantial first Mp3 player for me.
