Biography

THE SHAMEN

The Shamen, a forward-thinking fusion of electronica, acid house and psychedelia began their evolutionary life in Scotland in the mid 1980’s. They released their early albums on Moksha Recordings and then signed to OLI in 1989. The Shamen introduced the UK to Touring Club events with their 1988 Synergy shows, and were the first UK Band to release Singles, Albums and Live Show broadcasts… Read more in Amazon's Shamen Store

This comp is a really cost effective way of getting your hands on a fine selection of remixes - many by 90s mix-masters - of Shamen classics on CD. Your alternative would be to scrumage around at various auction sites and endless car boot sales to assemble the required shelf-length of CD Singles required (at a much greater cost if you actually manage to find them all, natch). The choice is yours, as they say!!

The selection here will appeal to newcomers to the Shamen sound and Shamen collectors (like myself) alike. 1st the facts : the Shamen were a leading class act of the 'alternative'/indie dance scene from the late 1980s through to the mid 1990s. My personal view is that their sounds stand the test of time and are as fresh and relevant as the day they were recorded way back when. Let's face it, they made some damn catchy little ditties. Highlights here include:

- Boss Drum (Beatmasters Tribal Buzz 12") = a pleasing soulfulesque mix;
- Pro-Gen (666 Edit) = an absolutely slammin' remix of the top tune from the Shamen stable;
- Hyperreal (William Orbit 12" Mix) = try sitting quietly while this is in your player - a slice of funked-up electro pop from the mix-master himself;
- Phorever People (Todd Terry Mix) = another uplifting floor-filler from another mix-master [what more can I say?].

All in all, this is a good overview of the Shamen sound. Sadly, some of their early (circa 1988-89), pre-chart success, pioneering indie releases - like 'Jesus Loves Amerika' & 'You, Me and Everything' - aren't included here. But this is due to this compilation being issued under license of the One Little Indian label, and, if they had been included, this release would be approaching greatness, so it's a small criticism.

Put the comic-book mickey take of 'Ez Eer Goode' to the back of your mind (as good as it was) and plug into nearly 80 minutes of proper full-on dance! Add to your collection my friends.

Hystericool should have all the makings of a classic shamen CD, bringing together some of the bands best tracks remixed by the likes of William orbit.
The songs themselves appear to have lost the charm they had in the early 90's, 'Boss Drum' looses its distinct vocals and 'Ebernezzer Goode' has the lyrics but the backing music is a little tame compared to the original.
For a fan of The Shamen the CD ...[the price] ....is worth getting, you do get 75 minutes of pulse racing music. But i feel the album only warrants the average score.

Remixes 12 Sep 2003
Format:Audio CD
Remixed tunes can be a mixed bag, and this album is no exception. While some of tunes really benefit from a remix some are not so good (Ebeneezer Goode Hardfloor Vocal Mix is pretty bad; they seem to have stripped everything out except the vocals and a heavy slow synth beat). The frankly weird Re:Evolution, here remixed as Re:Iteration FSL Re:Evolution Mix is still as trippy as before, if you like 70s/80s philosophers who are slightly off their heads, to a chill-out backing. The best remix of the Shamen, Ebeneezer Goode Beatmasters Mix is noteably absent, probably because it was included on the Boss Drum album.

In conclusion, if you love the Shamen, it is worth a purchase, but it is not for the idle browser.
