The selection here will appeal to newcomers to the Shamen sound and Shamen collectors (like myself) alike. 1st the facts : the Shamen were a leading class act of the 'alternative'/indie dance scene from the late 1980s through to the mid 1990s. My personal view is that their sounds stand the test of time and are as fresh and relevant as the day they were recorded way back when. Let's face it, they made some damn catchy little ditties. Highlights here include:
- Boss Drum (Beatmasters Tribal Buzz 12") = a pleasing soulfulesque mix;
- Pro-Gen (666 Edit) = an absolutely slammin' remix of the top tune from the Shamen stable;
- Hyperreal (William Orbit 12" Mix) = try sitting quietly while this is in your player - a slice of funked-up electro pop from the mix-master himself;
- Phorever People (Todd Terry Mix) = another uplifting floor-filler from another mix-master [what more can I say?].
All in all, this is a good overview of the Shamen sound. Sadly, some of their early (circa 1988-89), pre-chart success, pioneering indie releases - like 'Jesus Loves Amerika' & 'You, Me and Everything' - aren't included here. But this is due to this compilation being issued under license of the One Little Indian label, and, if they had been included, this release would be approaching greatness, so it's a small criticism.
Put the comic-book mickey take of 'Ez Eer Goode' to the back of your mind (as good as it was) and plug into nearly 80 minutes of proper full-on dance! Add to your collection my friends.
In conclusion, if you love the Shamen, it is worth a purchase, but it is not for the idle browser.
