Ferocious Hyrule enemies

Throughout the game's lengthly story mode you'll visit dungeons that you may have been in before in previous games… but some things may have changed. For example, you'll go up against enemies that might be a whole lot more ferocious than you remember. Raging reptile King Dodongo makes an impressive return, as does multi-headed menace, Manhandla. Each boss character will require some thought in order to take them down effectively.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice new way to play Zelda! 23 Nov. 2014
Like many of the other reviewers, I've played most Zelda games but never tried a Warriors game before this.

I found this game to be really enjoyable, but only in short stints. Most levels are somewhere between 20 minutes and an hour dependent on how quickly you run through - it is possible to stretch out each level by capturing non-essential forts and outposts (to capture you have to defeat a number of enemies, then the keep boss will appear - defeat the keep boss and you take the keep. The keep spawns soldiers for whichever side holds it).

The basic premise of the game is a Warriors game set against the Zelda world for story and characters, items etc. Essentially every level is the same: run to capture some keeps, once you capture them a boss enemy will spawn or one of your existing forts/accompanying characters will be under threat and you'll need to run back to the other side of the map to save them. Because every level is like that, I haven't yet played two levels in a row - but I do keep coming back to it a day or two later as even though its a basic game, it does have quite good replay value and is enjoyable.

In terms of next-gen gaming I would say the graphics are quite poor but that fits quite well with the Zelda theme, and the characters are well represented - you instantly recognise what and who they are from the various NES/SNES/Gameboy/N64 games. Perhaps it's a good introduction for younger players to the world of Zelda - there are no difficult mazes or puzzles, and even on the hard setting, there is never a strain on you in terms of needing perfect strategy. Then again, the enduring allure of the Zelda games is based in the maze-crawling and problem-solving, so from that perspective, maybe it isn't a good introduction at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars I recommend that floating voters give it a try 20 Sept. 2014
I've played a lot of Zelda, absolutely no Dynasty Warriors, and have clocked up about 10 hours on Hyrule Warriors since its release yesterday.

First up, I feel that the Zelda IP has been handled very well; there are lots of fun nods to different characters and games and the devs clearly knew and cared about the source material. I am a bit disappointed that the story mode is pretty bare-bones, as I think they had some new and interesting ideas for a Zelda story which could have been fleshed out more.

This game consists pretty much solely of chaotic, high-speed fighting in constantly changing battle situations. Regardless of which mode you're playing (Legend, Challenge or Adventure), fighting will be pretty much all you do. The battles are really fun and I've had a blast with the game so far, but I do wish there was something else to do when you just need to chill out for a bit - even something simple like sliding puzzles or target practice, which could easily have been incorporated into the NES-themed Adventure Mode. I haven't found it repetitive, just rather tiring after a while, but if I stop playing for a bit I'm soon raring to go again.

There are a range of fun things to collect - Skulltulas drop picture tiles, enemies drop crafting materials - so there's plenty here to keep completionists busy.

In summary, I really like the game, I will be buying the DLC expansion, I would be happy if they made a sequel, but I'm not going to be rushing out buying Dynasty Warriors games, as I think having a pre-existing interest in the characters is carrying the game to some extent. If you are in two minds about buying the game and don't actively dislike Dynasty Warriors, I would recommend you give it a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic addition to the franchise! 25 Nov. 2014
By Jay
A fantastic game that can be enjoyed by both fans of the Zelda series, and those that are new to it!
It combines the nostalgia of older games in the Zelda franchise with the fast paced combat and enemy density of Dynasty Warriors, the game itself centres on you playing a hero from the series (Be it Link, Impa, Midna etc.) and battling against evil forces on a battlefield. The aim of the game is to secure certain fortress and outpost locations on the map in order to both advance, gain advantage on the field and to discover treasure chests (Containing Weapons, Heart Pieces etc..).
The combat is fast and thrilling and you'll never have a chance to take a breath with each battle taking anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes dependant on the battlefield and your own skill! There are RPG elements to the game also, which include upgrading your characters with badges, forging weapons together to increase their strength and even a classic adventure mode that will definitely light a fire in the hearts of old-time Zelda fans.

Certainly a worthwhile purchase! 5/5

Cut down entire legions of enemies as Link, Zelda, Midna and other characters from The Legend of Zelda franchise using over-the-top powerful Dynasty Warriors-style moves. This tour de force through the beloved locales of Hyrule will have players battling some of the fiercest enemies in The Legend of Zelda history. Two players can play local co-op, with one player joining on the Wii U GamePad and another using a controller on the TV display.

Surprisingly, Hyrule Warriors does a good job of tying together the combat of Dynasty Warriors and the revered characters and lore of the Legend of Zelda series in a way that makes me feel powerful in a world I love. Character customization adds unique flavor to the simple combat, and the satisfying weapons, rewards, and story make it a fun alternative to the typically serious Zelda games. It’s just a shame you can’t share the action with a friend without significant slowdown.
