Beyond the North Wind 28 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD
I bought this purely on recommendation and reputation, and have not been disappointed.
As yet another example of the rich vein of contemporary English semi-traditional singing, this is a beautiful piece of work from start to finish, with some really outstanding tracks. The utterly, bitterly poignant "Past Caring" is music to raise the hairs on your neck and the jolly singalong title track is equally fine, while the riff running through "Butchers Boy" is one of those that pops up hours later and leaves you wondering where that came from. But those are just examples of many high-quality moments throughout the album.
The name of Jim Moray is an inevitable add-on, but Jackie Oates's music stands proudly on its own as separate and very lovely.
Highly recommended.

This CD has it all - derring-do, redemption, humour, perfidy, murder, gallantry - and lyrics combined with fine traditional musicianship which I believe will bring a tear to the most jaundiced music lover's eye

Traditional folk? I think it's fair to call it that. Certainly not as left-field as the Unthanks (from whence she hailed) or Alasdair Roberts, two of my other favorite contemporary folk outfits, but none the worse for that.

Great tunes, beautiful lyrics, magnificent vocals, inspiring harmonies and brilliant melodies from Jackie Oates and her accompanists. What's not to like?

Sweet stuff! 14 Sep 2009
Format:Audio CD
I was really pleased with this purchase - a nice step up from the Violet Hour CD.
Jackie has a clear fresh voice; great for folkies who like to hear every word. Nice musicianship that is subtle yet an asset where included.

Watch her career take off.

Alistair
