5.0 out of 5 stars At last! Hymns/Spheres in all its glory 19 Jan 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Finally we have the release that we Jarrett fans have been clamouring for since Noah built the Ark - the full double album of Hymns/Spheres available for the first time on CD. It's been a long wait, but it's worth it in the long run.

These improvisations may not be to everyone's taste (I would suggest, for someone new to Jarrett's music, that they start with the Koln Concert before diving in the deep end here), but I personally found the work challenging and moving by turns. There is some noticeable hiss in quieter sections when listening on headphones, but the sound of the organ itself is fantastic. Folks who are interested in Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and the organ works of Olivier Messiaen should investigate this. Highly recommended.

Well done ECM - now, how about releasing the full three-record set of the 1981 Bregenz/Munich concerts on CD?

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Music -- Severe Technical Problems 20 Jan 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It is very good that ECM has finally re-released in full Keith Jarrett's pipe-organ improvisations. The music is some of the most remarkable I have ever heard, and for me it is certainly one of Jarrett's most inspired works.

However, something has gone very wrong with the production. For a start, the recording level is incredibly low, and, worse, even when the volume of my amplifier is turned way up, much higher than with any other CD I have ever played, the music sounds peculiarly boxed-in, deadened, for want of a better description. The music is brilliant, worthy of five stars; but the production has made me reduce it to three stars.

Perhaps my memory is at fault, but I'm sure that the LPs of this release that I used to own gave a much deeper and wider sound than this. ECM is noted for its clear sounding productions. What on earth has happened here?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff 19 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD
This recording is what ECM is all about. Its out of the ordinary or maybe even out of this world. Few other record labels would even contemplate releassing an album like this or deliver it with a fraction of the panache either. Its Keith Jarrett noodling on a giant organ and it is fantastic. Some people would gladly pay to hear Jarrett noodle on the contents of their kitchen utensil drawer and of this evidence I can understand wny. Some of the sounds he conjures up are unbelievable and hardly what this instrument was built for. I hear Messaien, Ligeti, Eno, Tangerine Dream etc in this. I dont think its ECM's greatest sounding album mind you but then the technicalities of recording a disk like this are mind boggling. Highly recommended.
