Book Description

Caitlin Chance hopes that university life will open many doors. New friends, her own digs, and an enriched learning environment. It's what she needed to get on with her life. When she meets Steven Thorn during Fresher's week she has no idea that her future is on a different kind of trajectory. The attraction they share is instant and it is no surprise that they find themselves drawn to one another.

However, Steven has a secret past that is destined to reveal itself. Soon he will become a stranger to everyone and his new life in Brazil will begin. People like him are not meant to live amongst normal humans. The wheels are set in motion for his radical upheaval.

But first love is a powerful thing, and the connection forged between Caitlin and Steven is not easily broken.

The impossible is only the beginning...

Vanessa Wester's debut novel takes you from the University of Southampton to the depths of the Amazon jungle. An imaginary citadel is waiting to be discovered full of interesting characters, traditions and cultures. There are so many twists and details you will not be able to put this book down.

*****

"Although the author is inspired by novels in the same genre there is nothing wrong in that - most of us take inspiration from one source or another. Vanessa Wester has clearly taken inspiration from her own life and from her imagination. She has clearly spent time creating the imaginary citadel and understands its geography and customs which are made clear to the reader. The story-line flows smoothly... I always think there must be something to recommend a book which you would not normally select."

"When you first start getting into the story you automatically think Vampires, but as you discover more, Vampires is not the correct term for Steven's new family... It's well worth the read and as I got to the end I was frantically swiping my kindle screen looking for more as I wanted to know what happened next. I will definitely be reading the next book and would highly recommend it."

"Not usually the kind of book I like to read, although I was a big fan of Anne Rice in my youth. The unexpected twist in the tale made for compulsive reading, literally forcing you to discover what happens next. This story had it all, brilliantly written, loads of interesting characters, mystery, and romance with an unsettling undercurrent of tension. I cannot wait to read the rest of the trilogy!"
A Dawes

'This is a very exciting read. Would appeal to the Twilight fan-base, but has definitely put its own twist on the genre. A very well constructed piece, all the more impressive for being a debut novel.'
Adam

"This is definitely not another vampire tale. You are left, at the end, with lots of questions, there are so many ways the characters could go! I look forward to the next book and the continuing tale of Steven and Caitlin, his mother Emily and the rest of the "family" in the Amazon."
Susan

*~HYBRID has some scenes of an adult nature. It may be considered unsuitable for younger readers~*

Find out what happens next in COMPLICATIONS; and RETURNYou can also find out more about Steven's mother in the prequel, EMILY.

"I fell in love with Caitlin and Steven, the main characters in Hybrid, joined in on their adventures in Complications, and was rewarded with a finale that tied up all of the details and loose ends in Return book 3... A very satisfying ending! I highly recommend this trilogy."
Susan

"A great set of books. A must read for all. Imaginative story somehow believable. I would like to visit the community myself."

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read 13 Mar. 2015

Hybrid by Vanessa Wester

Steven Thorn has just started at Southampton University. He is confident, honest, hard-working and intelligent. When he bumps into Caitlin Chance, he notices an instant connection. Something he has never experienced before. Steven has spent pretty much most of his life keeping himself to himself.

Yet, a few months into his first year and unbeknown to Steven, his entire life is about to change. His family have a past, that even he wasn't aware of. Until now. Will Steven cope with the change in his life, or will his entire world come crashing down?

Hybrid is book one in The Evolution Trilogy written by Vanessa. Complications and Return are the following two books, with a prequel Emily available to also download (see bottom of page for download links).

The story is told from the viewpoint of Steven Thorn, in third person narrative. I felt like I am on the outside of his life, watching it. I could see and feel what he was going through, whilst being safely out of the way.
Vanessa has used two main settings for the story, Southampton UK and the Amazon Rainforest. The way that story transitions between the two countries is really well written. The journey, for the reader, was smooth. Vanessa took us on a journey across the world in order to travel between the two places.
Hybrid definitely falls into the 'world of books' as a paranormal romance. Anyone that knows me, knows that I tend to avoid romance stories. This book works out perfectly for me - if you chuck a bit of supernatural (or paranormal, whichever you prefer) or a murder into it and I'm all in.

I'm trying something new with this review, in that I am going to try and evaluate the book in just three words. So, here goes...

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read 9 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Not a book I would normally read however, I purchased it to see if suitable for my 12 year old daughter.
The story line was slow to get going but after the first couple of chapters I was hooked. I will recommend it to my daughter.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new genre for me 25 July 2013
By MikeC12
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The last time I read anything in a similar genre to this I was 16 so I wasn't sure how I would get on. Well, to be honest, I enjoyed it! Not as much as the usual books I read, hence only 4 stars, not 5, but I did think about 5 stars. The storyline of boy meets girl is not new but what happens to them is, at least to me.
I look forward to reading the next instalment
Vanessa is a new writer and I have now read 2 of her books and will be reading more me can recommend it with confidence so enjoy

4.0 out of 5 stars Great debut. 30 Jun. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Hybrid begins being mainly told through the eyes of the character Caitlin - a girl beginning her course at University after moving away from family life. The author does well to introduce all the characters here - there are a lot, she paints their pictures well as they meet, settling into their new surroundings and Halls of Residence.

It's not until her love interest, Stephen, is properly introduced that you realise there is more to this story than meets the eye, introducing a nice twist to keep the pages turning.

I thought this story really took off in the second half, the spin the author has taken on the `normal' vampire story is an interesting one and I really felt for this new main character and his situation. I look forward to finding out where this story is going to go.

A great debut.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read 25 Feb. 2014
By ChristophFischerBooks TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
"Hybrid (The Evolution Trilogy)" by Vanessa Wester is a very original paranormal novel with great romance and a unique story line. It starts off as a regular University romance story between Steven Thorn and Caitlin. They meet at her first day at a UK university and fall for each other. By allowing alternating viewpoints we get to feel for the characters and see the pure nature of their feelings for each other. Wester establishes also a few important side characters and gives enough time to the romance part before changing course and embarking on the paranormal part of the story. The latter is indeed quite unique and makes this book a welcome addition to the often predictable or repetitive helpings in the genre.
By openig the book with a mysterious prologue the author has already prepared us readers for some twists and the solid plot does not let us down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! 1 Nov. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Meet Steven Thorn, a university student whose life is turned upside when he discovers he's a Hybrid. Steven has lost his family, friends and his girlfriend and is then kidnapped by his maternal family and thrown into a world far away from everyone. Everyone human that is.

When you first start getting into the story you automatically think Vampires, but as you discover more, Vampires is not the correct term for Steven's new family and he must learn to accept what he has become and embrace his new life.

This book has a fabulous story line (except one teeny tiny little paragraph which made me laugh) but don't let that spoil it for you. It's well worth the read and as I got to the end I was frantically swiping my kindle screen looking for more as I wanted to know what happened next. I will definitely be reading the next book and would highly recommend it.
