Review

'Black's excellent and developing series of Printmaking Hanbooks is producing some little gems...an invaluable guide to a difficult subjects.'
--Artbookreview.net (January 2010)

Product Description

This book reveals the secrets of hybrid and combination techniques. Combined techniques are often used by printmakers as tricky ways of achieving particular results, and then not fully acknowledged or detailed in the information that accompanies the print when it is exhibited. Combination printmaking has a long history, but the explosion of media now available to printmakers has opened up many new possibilities. Learning the techniques associated with creating hybrid prints is, at the moment, a case of trial-and-error for most printmakers, unless they are lucky enough to have a tame and generous printmaking friend who will share their secrets; most printmakers closely guard the secrets of how they make their unique prints. This book will explain a lot of these 'secret' methods and techniques.

I found this to be the essential guide for hybrid printmaking. The book is written with a conversational tone, and is easy to understand and follow. The author covers all bases. Starting with a brief discussion of what is a hybrid print, she continues by sharing methods for combining a variety of printmaking techniques. She covers digital, stereoscopic and lenticular, collagraph, monoprint, lithography, intaglio, screen, and relief printing. There is even a section about 2D and 3D art constructions and handmade books. There are many photos and examples, and she provides explicit information about tools and supplies. Most of all, you really do learn about techniques that would otherwise take years of experimenting on your own. This book is an excellent resource for any printmaker, no matter your ability level.

Hybrid Prints is a wonderful book. It touches on the core of why artists make pictures and why they choose the mediums they choose to make them.
This book explains exactly what a print is and what it can be.
Printmaking techniques are presented with candour, succinct explanations and easy to understand definitions.
The hands on printmaking demonstrations are presented in step by step picture sequences.
Where it really excels is that is it full of excellent colour pictures of artists works and studio pictures. The gorgeous pictures in this book that make it a necessity for all artists and those interested in creating pictures, specifically using printmaking techniques, to have this book on their bookshelf.

This book is very well written, easily understanable for all levels of printmaker and contains a wealth of ideas and inspiration. It expresses essential techniques as well as allowing the artist to interpret as they will. I have found it a constant source of inspiration and has allowed me to understand techniques that I was previously unsure of. The emphasis on hybrid forms of printmaking is especially apt in our current print world of inter-disciplinary methods, and thus is a perfect specialist resource for the modern printmaker. Its tone of writing is very easy to read and, essentially, makes eveything fun and enjoyable. Highly highly recommended.
