Reviews

Australia released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital Stereo ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Matthew Chapman wrote and directed this hackneyed love story with Helen Mirren as Beaty, a nightclub hostess who turns tricks. Emory (John Shea) is an expatriate American who works the lights at Beaty's nightclub and is in love with her. But Beaty cannot deal in flowery sentiment, especially since she needs money, not romance, to support her young son. But Emory sees a way to attain money and romance -- he plans to execute a drug deal with his low-life partner and use the proceeds to take Beaty and her son away from the degenerate surroundings and into the light-of-day in the English countryside. But unfortunately, things do not go as planned. ...Hussy

Helen is rightly regarded as a National Treasure now; the oft (and justified) referral to her Oscar winning portrayal of Her Majesty being the Crown on her long and varied career.

As such, many actresses could get very squeamish and guarded about their earlier films, disassociating themselves totally and making excuses. Whilst Ms Mirren is unlikely to list 'Hussy' as one her key performances, her conviction and strength of character means that no doubt it has helped shape her career and made her a better all-round actor.

Yes, 'Hussy' sells itself as soft porn, like the very clubs she is an escort for, to entice you in. The DVD cover is tawdry-looking and repackaged to mention Mirren as the now Oscar winner. However, this film is not about bitching and petty jealousies of the working girls as was in Paul Verhoeven's "Showgirls"; the story does move on and away to being a (sort of) credible thriller that were a mainstay in UK cinema and TV back in the '80s. Series such as The Professionals; hard nosed, in your face crime, gritty and unrelenting. Not particularly good but generally watchable.

True, only Mirren shines on the acting front, and that hardly taxes her. But this is over thirty years ago. No-one else in the cast is actually bad to the point of being awful. To me, though, becoming of adult age about then myself, it is the London, the snapshot of a misspent youth of my own and making it slightly more human that is the best bit of this forgotten film.

I do not regret having bought this DVD; true it won't get played very often, if at all again, but as I said before 'Queen' Mirren did have to start out somewhere! From the blue sleaze of Soho up to Buckingham Palace - not many actors can say that. Except perhaps that Prince Philip, her 'husband' in The Queen was that quaint old pig farmer in 'Babe'......

Apart from the fact that it stars Helen Mirren there is very little else to recommend this film. It does not do her justice and has a poor plot.
