Helen is rightly regarded as a National Treasure now; the oft (and justified) referral to her Oscar winning portrayal of Her Majesty being the Crown on her long and varied career.

As such, many actresses could get very squeamish and guarded about their earlier films, disassociating themselves totally and making excuses. Whilst Ms Mirren is unlikely to list 'Hussy' as one her key performances, her conviction and strength of character means that no doubt it has helped shape her career and made her a better all-round actor.

Yes, 'Hussy' sells itself as soft porn, like the very clubs she is an escort for, to entice you in. The DVD cover is tawdry-looking and repackaged to mention Mirren as the now Oscar winner. However, this film is not about bitching and petty jealousies of the working girls as was in Paul Verhoeven's "Showgirls"; the story does move on and away to being a (sort of) credible thriller that were a mainstay in UK cinema and TV back in the '80s. Series such as The Professionals; hard nosed, in your face crime, gritty and unrelenting. Not particularly good but generally watchable.

True, only Mirren shines on the acting front, and that hardly taxes her. But this is over thirty years ago. No-one else in the cast is actually bad to the point of being awful. To me, though, becoming of adult age about then myself, it is the London, the snapshot of a misspent youth of my own and making it slightly more human that is the best bit of this forgotten film.

I do not regret having bought this DVD; true it won't get played very often, if at all again, but as I said before 'Queen' Mirren did have to start out somewhere! From the blue sleaze of Soho up to Buckingham Palace - not many actors can say that. Except perhaps that Prince Philip, her 'husband' in The Queen was that quaint old pig farmer in 'Babe'......

1.0 out of 5 stars Not her greatest hour 1 Feb 2010
Format:DVD
Apart from the fact that it stars Helen Mirren there is very little else to recommend this film. It does not do her justice and has a poor plot.

2.0 out of 5 stars An Astonishingly Bad Film: Destined for Cult Status 2 Aug 2006
By Gregory Mast - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This relic from 1980, a soft porn disco melodrama about hookers working a seedy British nightclub, is destined for cult status. Helen Mirren portrays a prostitute raising a small child, with no cliché left unmolested. Standard soap opera stuff, sprinkled with dreadful "musical" numbers at the night club, containing just enough nudity to make the enterprise bearable. This film is full of unintentional laughs, many from the ultra-cheesy fashions and conventions of the era. However, it is almost worth watching just to hear Helen Mirren repeat the line, "Make love to me!" at random intervals whenever some gratuitous nudity is in order.

The quality of the DVD transfer is barely adequate and is presented in full screen format. For fans of Helen Mirren and bad films only, this film is a rare instance where the two converge.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it JUST to see an early Helen Mirren! 14 May 2012
By Anthony Prudori - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Was the movie deep? No.

Was it thought provoking? Nope.

Beautifully shot with lucious scenery? Negative.

Was it a good example of movies of the era, including cheesy disco song & dance? Yup!

If nothing else, worth viewing to show you the "before" Helen Mirren to serve as the baseline for her performances in later films.
