Product Description

Review

'...fulfills its aims admirably, providing an advanced introductory survey of the whole of Husserl's vast empire, together with provocative and illuminating interventions on a number of important particular points and disputes.' - Wayne Martin, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

'This is a first-rate volume... the text is rich with historical background and comment. But it is the clarity and depth of understanding with which David Woodruff Smith explains the material that is so overwhelmingly present. An excellent work.' - Gayle Ormiston, Kent State University, USA

'A masterful presentation of the entire range of Husserl's thinking, seen from the perspective of a leading analytical phenomenologist.' - Barry Smith, University of Buffalo, USA

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, clear and engaging., 22 April 2008
Woodruff Smith has constructed a perfect model of an introduction. He has also ably demonstrated why Husserl is such an important philosopher.

My motivation for reading this book was to find out more about phenomenology as the background from which arose later thinkers such as Heidegger and Sartre but this book has introduced Husserl as being concerned with matters such as logical semantics and the philosophy of science in ways that seem more akin to the analytic tradition. Of course, Husserl was writing before this split occurred (if indeed such a split is in fact genuine,) and 'Husserl' shows haw Husserl's thought must be seen in this context alongside Bolzano, Frege and Lotze.

Also what comes through strongly is Husserl as a systematic thinker. The introduction takes you on a tour of Husserl's philosophy and ties it in with his biography, the book then looks at different subjects chapter by chapter. This book is clearly written and well laid out I thoroughly recommend it to anyone from beginner to those with some knowledge of Husserl who perhaps want an overview of his system of thought or a survey of recent literature (a generous bibliograpphy is included).
