Received this hatchet/small axe in good condition well wrapped and padded. It had a light coat of oil on it so no worries about rust or corrosion. The tool itself seems to be well balanced though not perfect as the head is heavier than another stainless steel Coleman hatchet I own. The wood handle seems to be of a good quality and there are no splits or fissure cracks in the grain so it was made correctly from what I can tell. The edge was sharp enough to use immediately and I have only had to debur it lightly on a wetstone to restore the sharpness after several uses. It was put to use right away to dispatch several small tree stumps and an unwanted large shrub in my garden without any problems. When held properly this hatchet can be used effectively for notching, carving, de-barking, shaving and planing green wood for bushcraft activities. It performs fairly well on chopping cured hardwood as well with a little more effort. It seems to fit the bill for what I need it to do...good around the garden or in the field. It also looks really traditional and handmade like a tool from a bygone era. Would be proud to carry it into the wilderness with me for camping or survival. I grew up on a farm on a tract of wooded land in the southern states of rural America and used axes, hatchets, and chainsaws from a young age so I know how to use them. This is a good small axe. I am glad I purchased it.

Very pleased with this new hatchet. Very reasonable price for a sturdy business like bit of kit. Delivery was prompt and axe needed only a minor strop to get it really sharp. All good!

This is a very versatile hatchet - i use it for splitting smaller pieces as well as carving. It is also light enough to be carried without weighing you down too much. Really pleased with my purchase and delivery was prompt also.

I went out looking for a quality axe, and was tempted by a Gransfors small forest axe, which has a reputation of one of the best axe manufactures of axes. My friend has one, and its beautiful....equally beautiful as this one....infact they are almost identical.

After a quick sharpen up, this axe holds its edge well, and performs equally well as the much more expensive Granfors.

Well worth it, looks and perfoms excellently!

best value hatchet in the world not finished to the high quality of a gransfors bruk but 30 mins on a decent oil stone and you have a 50 quid tool for less than 20. forged at wetterlins same as gransfors less than half the price ding dong cant go wrong.

Yes you have found a hultafors stamped axe/hatchet supplied/subcontracted by husqvarna. Excellent price for a hand forged swedish steel hand made axe. Brass riveted thick leather guard for the edge. Does not have what I have seen described as ears as seen on the gransfors axe which is of no consequence. The handle is hickory and again is of excellent quality. Bargain when compared to the price of the Gransfors Bruks.

Destroyed a cheap hand Axe, was looking for something decent to replace it, I was prepared to pay a lot more but thought I'd see how this Axe went as it was so cheap. . A total bargain , well made, good balance much better that I thought. This is the kind of review you want to see about a product. You'd have to pay at least twice as much for anything close to it. Used for firewood, kindling not crafting. . . Just Buy it

I was a bit in two minds about this review. Do I write one about this axe as a stand alone item, as a simple tool or as compared to the the other things that claim to be trekking or backpacking axes?
I own a couple of other trekking axes and wanted something short that I could actually get in a rucksack rather than strapping to the outside. I was impressed by the spec and write ups for this so I took a chance.
Firstly, it's heavy. At 1100g approx it's actually about 100g heavier than the much longer and substantial Wettinglings Long hunters axe I'd been using.
Secondly it's no where near as refined as Gransors or Wetterlings. The balance is extremely head heavy and the grind is a little bit rough and messy and with a high angle on the edge that doesn't glide through wood as well as the more expensive axes. It's also a bit silly that they feel the need to emboss their logo right on the cutting face.
I've no idea why there is a wrist lanyard on an axe this length as using one would be a good way to cut your leg off if you let go and it swung in on you. It also came with no safety instructions and as it's clearly a beginners axe I was surprised by this. I had to sand the insubstantial, ugly safety diagram off the helve and treat with camellia oil.
That said it arrived sharp , has a serviceable sheath, cuts OK and the helve and head are well put together.
If you want a no nonsense tool that will do a bit of gardening and kindling which is also strong enough for commercial work there are a lot worse ways to spend £22. If your're looking for a bushcraft axe however, a better way might be to put your money away until you've got enough to buy the real thing.
