Product Description

Bob Mould, Grant Hart, and Greg Norton formed Hüsker Dü in 1979 as a wildly cathartic outfit fueled by a cocktail of anger, volume, and velocity. Here's the first book to dissect the trio that countless critics and musicians have cited as one of the most influential bands of the 1980s. Author Andrew Earles examines how Hüsker Dü became the first hardcore band to marry pop melodies with psychedelic influences and ear-shattering volume. Readers witness the band create the untouchable noise-pop of LPs like New Day Rising, Flip Your Wig, and Candy Apple Grey, not to mention the sprawling double-length Zen Arcade. Few bands from the original American indie movement did more to inform the alternative rock styles that breached the mainstream in the 1990s. Hüsker Dü truly were visionaries.

Book Description

Taking their name from a popular Danish children’s board game, Bob Mould, Grant Hart, and Greg Norton formed Hüsker Dü in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1979 as a wildly cathartic outfit fueled by a cocktail of volume and velocity. Author Andrew Earles examines how Hüsker Dü became the first hardcore band to marry pop melodies with psychedelic influences and ear-shattering volume, and in the process become one of the most influential rock bands of the 1980s indie underground. Earles also explores how the Twin Cities music scene, the creative and competitive dynamic between Mould and Hart, and their personal lives all contributed to the band’s incredible canon and messy demise. Few bands from the American indie movement did more than Hüsker Dü to inform the alternative rock styles that breached the mainstream in the 1990s. Here, finally, is the story behind their brilliance.

At last! A good biog of one of rock music's most influential bands. The author avoids the oral history rubbish which made the last Replacements book such a let down and gives us a decent history of the Huskers from their early hardcore punk days through to the major label deal with Warners and beyond. Its a shame Bob Mould did not contribute, but both Grant and Greg give great insight into the tours, songs and even album artwork. The authors clear enthusiasim and knowledge (despite thinking "Flip Your Wig" is a better album than "New Day Rising"!) is obvious but he is also careful not to over emphasise praise, charting the bands mistakes along with their triumphs. I particulaly enjoyed how he challanged some of the myths surrounding this band and I found his deconstruction of the "Zen Arcade" album to be excellent. I cannot see this book reaching out to new fans but for anyone who loves the Huskers music then it's a really good read from start to finish. Now how about all the records re-released please?

Despite Husker Du being mentioned in numerous books, like Going Underground: American Punk 1979-1992 and Our Band Could be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991 there's never been a devoted text to this rather enigmatic band. The rumours that surround Husker Du are plentiful and at times absurd. This book does try to bring fact to the story of Husker Du and starts by explaining it's not going to be a salacious accounts of infighting, did they didn't they (with regards to Bob and Grant) and other issues that have dogged this band since it demise. The book does fill in a lot of blanks and despite my being a bit of a Husker Du nerd I discovered alot I didn't know about the band and explanation was given to album titles, song titles and lyrics - I did experience a lot of "how did I miss that" moments. Going back to the records with this new knowledge did make me enjoy the music in a different way. One criticism of the book is that it is quick to read and some issues I was expecting to be addressed didn't feature or were briefly mentioned. I anticipate See a Little Light: The Trail of Rage and Melody!

Hmmm 14 Feb 2011
Format:Hardcover
This is a biog of Husker Du that although probably factually accurate seems to suffer from a lack of direction. As a long time Husker Du fan I was excited by the prospect of an in depth exploration of the band, its member's contributions and the scene in which the band operated.

On several occasions the material from interviews was repeated verbatim in the same chapter and the overall tone of the book seemed to grate - tending towards a rather juvenile 'i have finally understood what others failed to grasp' attitude.

No doubt written as a 'spoiler' prior to Bob Mould's imminent biog, this makes for an informative but essentially unrewarding read.
