3.0 out of 5 stars leisure read, 15 April 2009
This review is from: Hush (Paperback)
not so exciting, not so extraordinary. just as its tittle. However, the story does make me feel curious about this little princess's fate and carry on till the very end page of this book

5.0 out of 5 stars Hush - An amazing tale, 20 Sep 2008
By Julie Macarthur (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hush (Paperback)
I have been looking for a book that stood up against "The Raging Quiet" for a good few years. Having history, adventure, sorrow and triumph in one book makes a tall order to be wrapped in the form of a Young Adult book (I'm 22 and have a degree, but I prefer less taxing language).

This tale of an Irish girl who is captured by Vikings, and taken on a very long journey and encounters many heartaches, finds a reality she didnt realise existed, but also makes a niche within this new world she encounters, is truely amazing and captivating.

I recommend this book to all who love the genres I previously mentioned, definatly worth buying and keeping to read many times over!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, 23 May 2008
By Avid Reader (England, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hush (Paperback)
This is a fascinating story about the power of silence. I have read it numerous times now and I think that it has become one of my favourite books. Donna Jo Napoli makes you really feel for Melkorka, makes you want her to succeed, makes you feel her joy and pain and sorrow, something that not many writers can do nowadays. After you finish reading it you almost feel as if it is YOU that can't speak.

The time period it is set in is very interesting, and one I would love to see more books written about. All her descriptions are there enough to give the reader an image of the places, but unobtrusive enoguh to let the story flow. Actually, the details are what makes it so good - when you're silent, what can you do but watch and learn?

The only thing 'wrong' would be that the ending is a bit...vague. No, that's not quite the word. The book stops at a point where her life is just beginning anew, which really made me want a sequel to be written! But I think that it is fine how it is, leaving the rest of her life up to the reader's imagination.

All in all, an excellent book that you really should make the time to read. (Not really for readers younger than thirteen or fourteen)
