Book Description

They call their abilities Talents, and that's what they call themselves as well. Talents are people born with supernatural powers, feared by the population at large. Possession of an "unregistered ability" has become illegal, and those who are discovered are forcibly removed to government-run research facilities. They do not return. And so the Talents try, as best they can, to keep their abilities secret-some more successfully than others. For some, keeping that secret begins to define who they are. That's where Hush Money begins... Be normal, invisible. Don't get close to anyone. Those are the rules to live by for seventeen-year-old Joss. She spent years as an outsider, hoping to hide what she is, until the new girl, Kat, decides she's friend material. Kat doesn't realize her mistake when she stands up for Joss against Marco, a guy who's been giving Joss a hard time since freshman year. Joss is horrified when these heroics lead to the reveal of Kat's Talent. Now she has an unasked-for best friend, who is the victim of an extortion plot by the school bully, who used to like Joss. And if that wasn't all complicated enough, Dylan, Joss's long-time crush, is finally starting to talk to her. But as Marco's best friend, can Dylan be trusted at all? Can Joss keep her secret and still save her friend? And what's more important, staying safe or doing what's right? Hush Money is recommended for readers 13 and over due to strong language.

About the Author

Susan Bischoff is an incurable romantic with a soft-spot for superheroes, those larger-than-life characters whose supernatural abilities set them apart from everyone else. Some are loved by all and known by none, some are woefully misunderstood and mistreated by those they serve. Traditionally, the life of the super-powered being seemed to her to be one destined for loneliness, and yet so deserving of a happily ever after. The Talent Chronicles series, which tells the stories of superhuman characters in a world that fears and persecutes them, was born out of her desire for happily ever after in the superhero realm. For superhero hook-ups! Superhero Romance! These are stories for those who love romantic storylines in television shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville, and in movie series like Batman, Superman, and The X-Men. She's been known to say, "These are stories for people who wished Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor could have worked things out." Susan lives in Tennessee with her high-school sweetheart husband, a daughter, two cats, and one, big puppy. She loves most everything girly: sewing, knitting, and other needlework crafts, baking, doll collecting, shojo manga, and is particularly fond of things that are pink. Another favorite pastime is replaying the kissing scene at the end of the BBC's North and South.

My thoughts: Those who know me may have heard my quite loud and vehement protests against YA novels, so you might wonder what has happened that I'm reviewing a YA book. Well I confess: Hush Money happened! I gave it a chance because all the pro reasons (exciting premise, great cover and a wonderfully kind author) were overwhelming against the only one con: that it was YA. So I picked it up and couldn't put it down for hours! (Warning: Hush Money is highly addictive, so take care when you start reading it, you won't be able to stop reading after a mere couple of pages, or the famous "just one more chapter".)

So you might be curious or even intrigued to learn why Hush Money is so unique that it overthrew all my concerns (and maybe prejudices) about YA novels. So let's see:

1. The heroine Joss is no whiny teenage girl, she is just as strong, independent and kick ass as any adult urban fantasy heroine. She takes charge and solves her problems on her own.

2. But of course there is a perfectly dreamy hero to help her out and be her support, who is generous, brave, warm hearted and chivalrous. :-)

3. The synopsis/premise of the novel is freshly unique and exciting! It is action packed and will keep you turning the pages long after bedtime.. (trust me, I speak from experience ;-) lol)

4. Besides the two great main characters, the secondary characters are equally well developed and layered, offering a complex and colourful palette of characters.

5. And the thing that makes all the previous reasons possible: Susan Bischoff's fantastic writing! It is evocative, detailed yet fast paced. The action and characters leap off the pages thanks to her talent with words. She is a true story teller, and I cannot wait to read more about Joss & co.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Reveal My Talent! 16 Sep 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
For Fairview High School students, Joss and Dylan, living with a secret has become second nature. In fact, it's a way of life for a number of families in their town. They hide their individual secrets, their Talent (special powers), from the National Institute of Ability Control (NIAC), which seems to sequester children with Talents at a special State school, where goodness knows what goes on! High school politics and keeping one's Talent hidden seems to be an impossible task.

Susan Bischoff takes us on a nail-biting journey as Joss and Dylan try to keep themselves and their friends safe from the NIAC while battling Marcus, another teen with a Talent, who seems bent on causing trouble and exposing Joss and her friends. We witness the beginning of a sweet romance between Joss and Dylan. The story is far from over, with a lot of questions still to be answered. I look forward, with great anticipation, to the next book in the Talent Chronicles. Get writing, Susan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome and Refreshing Debut 23 April 2011

I read a review somewhere that Hush Money was Roswell meets Smallville. I think that's such an apt description; and as a massive Roswell fan I got really excited about reading this book.

It TOTALLY lived up to my expectations. Susan Bischoff is an excellent YA writer, and I'm pretty surprised this novel hasn't been picked up by a traditional publisher. The characters are so well developed, their voices realistic and likeable, and the development of the relationships between them is nicely-paced.

Hush Money is told from Joss and Dylan's perspectives. Unbeknownst to one another they have a crush on each other - Bischoff pulls this off with great panache. There's nothing cheesy or cliché about their attraction to each other, and I loved how they actually grew to like each other over the course of the novel rather than having this instant connection I call the `soul mate phenomenon' that's so popular in this genre. I don't mind the phenomenon, I just like a break from it sometimes, and Hush Money gave me that.
I particularly love Joss. She's my kind of heroine. She's a bit of a cool loner, with too much responsibility weighing on her shoulder. I loved that she wasn't perfect, that she didn't always make the heroic decisions, and that it took her a while to come out of her shell in that respect. It made her authentic - like a confused, scared teen would be. Also, for someone who's kind of introverted and has a massive crush, she reacted perfectly to Dylan whenever he spoke to her. It was great reading.

The plot itself is really different. Marco's character is truly nasty, and all through the book I waited for him to get his comeuppance. I can't wait to read the next novel to see what happens there.
