In the blues, years or even decades of "payin' dues" is the norm. Most blues musicians toil in relative obscurity, and those that have been at it a while wear their struggles like a badge of honor. By those standards, Ana Popovic's rise has been meteoric. Within five years of leaving her native Yugoslavia, the 29-year-old singer/guitarist has played all major European music ... Product Description

Netherlands-based Ana sings the blues with aggression and style on Hush, a peculiarly rock style reminiscent of Chrissie Hynde. Indeed, much of this young singer/guitarist's debut solo album is like listening to The Pretenders if they'd grown up on a diet of Buddy Rich and Muddy Waters, not Johnny Thunders. It's an accomplished, rounded debut named after her first band, Hush, formed in her native Belgrade in October 1995 while she was still a teenager. Half is self-written tracks like the sultry "I Won't Let You Down" and lovesick "Mended", half are covers of classic such as Tom Waits" speculative "Downtown". The standout is the full-on-blues duet, "Bring Your Fine Self Home", Ana trading licks and proud vocals with mentor Bernard Allison. --Jerry Thackray

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a Bad record 14 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Ana is probably the best woman guitarist i have ever seen. She uses slide to the extent that Hendrix and the experience did and she uses it well. After seeing her live her overall stage performance could be improved but and exellent album anyway.

I first bought her later CD, Comfort to the Soul, after hearing her on Paul Jones' Radio 2 show and was inspired to look for more of her work.

After four excellent CDs I still prefer this earliest CD, Hush, her singing has more drive and her superb guitar work is more diverse. I can feel Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and other excellent Jazz influences pushing through the Blues and Rock.

I find myself listening to Hush mostly because of the greater depth of music! However, the two latest and very different CDs Still Making History and Blind For Love are also interesting, moving away from her roots so clearly shown here and towards more mainstream Rock and Funk.

Ana has an interesting biography and samples of all her music on her website, it is well worth a look and listen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for me 7 Dec 2003
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought this CD on the strength of the one track that I had heard, a blues duet with Bernard Allison "Bring your fine self home", Itis knockout. Unfortunately, there is no other track on the CD like it! I have played the CD a few times to try to get to like it, but without success - too modern jazz/jazzy for my taste, I am afraid. Don't be caught out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Music fan from Seattle is smoking dope 29 Aug 2003
By Jeff Durbin - Published on
Format:Audio CD
There's certainly pressure on Ana's second album to show she's not a flash in the pan. But, the reality is that she won a W.C. Handy award and that is not an accomplishment to be slighted. She definitely has a Bonnie Raitt / Susan Tedeschi sound to her. The music is vibrant and upbeat and not necessarily 'bluesy' but I had trouble accepting that Bonnie Raitt was a blues star when Nick of Time put her over the top. Popovic is the real deal. Enjoy the music and ignore the occasional critic that expects her to walk on water to prove her success is due to her talent and not her looks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD from WC Handy Award Nominee 20 Jun 2003
By Michael Flosi - Published on
Format:Audio CD
The only down side to the CD is you don't get the visual effect of seeing Ana play. As a fellow musician, she is the best slide guitar player around (man woman or child). The CD has a great variety of styles, and she does them all well. Her slide/wah-wah work is a throwback to the great Earl Hooker. Get this CD, her next CD, and most of all, see her in person if you get a chance!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it 7 Dec 2006
By Slavisa Skipina - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Though this is one of the early works by Ana Popovic, it already has all the features which characterize her works today - great songs, great voice and a killer guitar sound.

I love this album, maybe even more because it is not so acoustically perfect like those made on mega-dollars budget. That's been replaced with a great atmosphere and biting guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars KCP3 20 Feb 2010

Another great album by Ana. Most of you Ana fans know she's studied jazz and you'll always find a little jazz influence in her blues. There are few female guitar players who are better and not that many male guitar players either. This woman has talent! Hope I can go see her the next time she tours the US.
