Book Description

From the bestselling author of THE RISE AND FALL OF A YUMMY MUMMY. 'The number you are calling is unavailable. Please try again later.' Gina has only been married six months when her husband Rex goes on holiday to Spain and vanishes without a trace, tipping her dream new marriage into nightmare. As a frantic search gets nowhere, Gina is adamant that he's alive and vows never to give up hope. Speculation is rife: he's drowned at sea, lost his memory...or just walked away. Troubling stories start to emerge about Rex's past that are hard to square with the man she married. How well does she really know her handsome, charismatic husband? They'd fallen in love so quickly, so passionately, that the past had seemed barely relevant to either of them. Now an explosive secret threatens to rewrite the story of their love affair. As the mystery of Rex's whereabouts deepens, Gina begins to wonder whether you only ever truly know the person you love once they've gone.

More About the Author

My new novel, Husband, Missing, is about what happens when the person you are bonkers in love with walks out of the door one day and doesn't come back. It's about the kind of thing that doesn't happen to people like you, happening to you.

I also write features for magazines and newspapers. I tweet. I eat. And I love reading, even if I don't seem to have time to read every book I buy - my shelves are full of good intentions. I have three children. And one husband - not yet missing.

HUSBAND, MISSING - what the critics are saying.

'A gripping story,' Candis magazine

'Slickly written and cleverly plotted, this has some engaging characters, great pace and a truly gripping mystery that's blended beautifully with the love story told in retrospect. Engrossing.' The Sunday Mirror

4.0 out of 5 stars When you think you have it all? 6 May 2013
To be honest, I thought this was going to be a very formulaic romance story, of the boy meets girl, they marry, he disappears and then he reappears and everything will be all right with the world. How wrong I was, and how much I had judged the book based on cover, and the blurb on the back. This is far more than a formulaic novel - in fact I would even put it in the thriller genre if I was having to pigeon-hole books, which I dislike doing.

Gina, has a whirlwind romance and marries within a year Rex, after she met him the park. This is "the one" Gina tells everyone, and whilst she thought she would never know when she had found him - she suddenly realises that she has found him and that when you know you know.

However, this bubble that Gina has created with Rex and that has pushed away family and friends to the outskirts of her life is about to burst.

Rex goes missing.

Gina wants to find him. Gina knows he is still alive. She has the utmost belief in their relationship and that Rex will return.

But as the days turn into weeks, turn into months, Rex is still missing and Gina keeps trying, but as she tries to find out where he is, she discovers a completely different man to the one she married.

Did Gina really know the man she married? Was she so wrapped up in finding the one, that she missed the vital clues about his personality?

You have to keep turning the page, as whilst Gina discovers more about Rex as we do as readers, Gina discovers a lot more about herself and her ability to survive in a very different world to the one she dreamed of.

Through all the heartache over Rex, Gina finds the ache of heart is actually for someone else.

5.0 out of 5 stars YOU CAN'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER 26 Jan. 2013
By Mrs. C. Swarfield TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I very nearly passed this book by as it looked like the type of story that I would not
normally go for - I really thought it was standard chick lit. I am so glad that I did
send for it as I have read it in a day and I absolutely loved it.

The story is told through Gina's eyes and you feel everything as you read as keenly as she
does. The plot has so many twists and turns and it is impossible to guess what is going
to happen next.

Gina and Rex marry after six months together, they meest after he rescues her from a
mugging. They seem blissfully happy although he still goes on holidays on his own -
and it is on one of these holidays with his brother that he disappears. Gina then
discovers she is pregnant - and she is convinced he is still alive....

I did not want to put this down and I was drawn in from the first page - it is a really
brilliant read - I really liked Gina and routed for her all the way through -I did not
see the end coming - a brilliant and entertaining read. I was going to give it four
stars but realised it is worthy of five - I am going to read her previous novel...

4.0 out of 5 stars What if your husband just disappeared one day? 1 Jun. 2013
By Julia Flyte TOP 100 REVIEWER
Gina and Rex are newlyweds and blissfully happy. Then Rex disappears while on a holiday in Spain with his brother and two friends. He headed out windsurfing one day and didn't return. Almost immediately, Gina realises that things aren't quite as they seem. The day before he disappeared, Rex withdrew a large sum of money that has disappeared with him (as has his passport). He has wiped all the history from his laptops at home. Strangers ring telling her that Rex owed them money. She discovers that he wasn't the highflyer at work that she thought he was.

If this was a thriller, Rex's secret other life would come out, Gina would find herself in danger and probably miraculously acquire the ability to fire a gun. Instead, being a chicklit novel, the emphasis is more on how Gina comes to term with her missing - maybe alive, maybe dead - husband and how she gradually learns more about his life and the secrets that they kept from one another. While we do in the end find out what happened to Rex, it's not the main point of the novel.

The central mystery in this book kept me reading although the characters let the book down for me - Gina is so hopeless, believing what she wants to believe and refusing to take any ownership of the situation that she's in. I also felt that some of the connections between various characters were overly forced for the sake of having one more secret to uncover. If there were half ratings I'd probably say 3.5 stars, but given that I devoured this book quite happily in a day, I am giving it four.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review Polly Williams - Husband, Missing 20 May 2013
`Husband, Missing' tells the story of Gina and Rex, a couple who are blissfully in love and got married after only knowing each other for six months. Everything seems perfect, until one day Gina receives a phone call that Rex has gone missing. He had gone on holiday to Spain with his brother Jake and some friends, went out surfing one morning and didn't return. Gina's world comes crumbling down, but in between all the chaos she knows Rex is still alive; she can feel it. Even when her friends and family lose hope and tell her to move on, Gina cannot let go of her husband. However, as time goes by, Gina gets to know more and more about Rex's life before she appeared in the picture, and she starts to have doubts about the man and the marriage she so blindly believes in...

After the first couple of pages, I was already hooked by this story. From the moment Gina hears Rex has gone missing, I only wanted to read on in order to find out what was going to happen. Where was Rex? What had happened to him? The story is told from Gina's perspective, which results in the reader being taken along on this emotional rollercoaster of feelings. The mystery surrounding Gina's husband, Rex, kept me intrigued and I wasn't satisfied until I had finished the novel. However, it wasn't just Gina, but also the other characters that made this story so compelling. Rex is the link which connects various people to Gina: his half-brother Jake, his mother Clarice, his ex-girlfriend Mandy. These characters were all well-developed and had their own story to tell, which I loved.

I hadn't read any of Polly Williams' work before this novel, but I heard good things about `The Rise and Fall of a Yummy Mummy' and `The Angel at No. 33'. After reading this novel, I will certainly check out Polly's other books as well.
