This is a rather different slant on the hare-and -tortoise story: hare is always bounding around and gets irritated by tortoise's slower approach to life,("and chew each leaf at least eleventy times" "eleventy" is rather like those toddler words that just mean "a lot" ! ) but when it's time for the bedtime story, hare no longer wants to rush: he needs tortoise to take his time, and they both enjoy the story, slowly.
Layn Marlow illustrates her own story with a gentle palette, with lots of plants and creature to talk about, and the contrast between hare's rushed and untidy lifestyle and tortoise's bemused plod is beautifully drawn, (with the consequences of hare's untidiness discreetly pointed out...), and her use of single and double-page spreads make good use of the creamy white space to give a very relaxed feel as the reader proceeds. A delightful story for a child who is always rushing about, or a reassuring story for the quieter child, and perfect for bedtime.
