This tells the tale of Candy. Beginning with him as a puppy, it follows his early life where, after being initially loved, his actions are dealt with harshly, leading to lifelong fears. He becomes lost after a trip in the car, and it shows his efforts to survive in the countryside. Eventually he is rescued, and has to learn to trust and respect the Captain, who adopts him. There are a few misunderstandings in this new relationship, but the story does have a happy ending ;o)

This was part of my bookshelf when I was a child. I can still remember the first time I read it - I started reading it at night, soon I was engrossed, and in tears at the fate of the little puppy. It was the only time that my parents told me to finish a book before getting to sleep (they knew I wouldn't sleep as I was so engrossed). It was a long night, but well worth it, as the little dog learned to forget past ill-treatment, and accept the kindness and love he was given from the captain. I found my old book yesterday, and re-read it - it still had the power to affect me deeply - maybe I'm an old softie, but I do need a new copy of the book to replace my old battered one ;o)

Children, particularly those who have experienced some trauma, identify strongly with Candy, a homeless young dog. Candy cannot accept the love which humans extend towards him because he is overcome with fear from an incident while he was a puppy.

DeJong understands and can convey human weakness and stupidity in their treatment of Candy. This theme is all too familiar to children. Yet the adults have a complexity which is not often present in children's fiction; their intentions are often good, but their understanding of young people learning and growing is lacking. it is this ignorance which lets the adults down and scars the young puppy's life. Candy knows and understands and ultimately forgives and in so doing, overcomes his fear.

In spite of the number of years that have passed since this book was published, it still has a timeless appeal to children today.
