It was the beginning of the term and I held Hirsh's account of Carters story in my hand reading the book in front of 28 young New Zealanders - my class. As I read the last few pages of Rubins story to my class, many started to cry as did I.

The words 'rise above the people and places that hold you down' became our class motto as Rubin had repeated the words to himself and his friend as they sat in prison discussing his confiction and terms.

As a teacher I have never read a book so passionately and possibly never again will I be so passionate about such a story. I could not believe the response from the 9 and 10 year students I taught. Little people with great awareness of injustice and unfairness.

A truely epic account which resonates the atmosphere and climate of the place and time it was birthed. There were so many issues my class and I discussed at depth. Its one of the stories - it means something to someone when there is a real life hero involved.

A real challenge to many adults I would guess! 'Rise above the people and places that hold you down.'

Here is a story combining many genres. If you like black history, crime, social and moral injustices, biographies or law, this book is for you. James S. Hirsch tells the story of the 'Hurricane', a prize fighter whose life is changed in an instance. Rubin Carter and John Artis are travelling home one night, when they are pulled over by police...they are trailed for murder...and are found guilty - recieving 3 'life' sentences.

Rubin's journey starts inside jail...his non-violent rebellion against the system is inspiring and opens your eyes to the world around you. When he befriends a black youth, Lesra Martin, his life changes course again...

This book will change the way you look at life and will give you a real life account of the injustices that were and are in the world.

This book is a very in depth detail of Rubin 'The hurracaine'Carter's story.it's exiting, sad and has it's ups and down's just like any good biography, exept this one differs from the rest. It's more....compelling,it touched me in a way i havn't felt like when reading a biog/autobigraphy,i think it's because of it's INJUSTICE.The book is about a boxer who's very-and i mean very- good at doing what he does. It's placed in the 1950's to start so you could imagine the racism goin on for black people at that time in America,he's doing really well and is macking it into the 'bigtime' when he get's falsly accused for a murder, just because a police sargent has a grudge against him from a past expierience. The book is written while he is in prison and there is a film staring Denzel Washington out on video now!...my advice...GET IT!
