Michael Hurd was a pioneer in composing brief, witty and, above all, performable choral music for children to enjoy. When Jonah-Man Jazz arrived in 1966, young singers and their teachers had modern-sounding music to make and share. Pastiche jazz, blues and rock n roll rhythms, memorable tunes and entertaining lyrics proved a winning combination, as they also do in Swingin Samson, Rooster Rag, Prodigal and Captain Corams Kids. This recording is the first to be supported by the British Music Society Charitable Trust Michael Hurd Bequest, established to further the appreciation of the composers output.

Format:Audio CD
This is an often overlooked piece of music, which is regretable. It's beauty and lyricism deserve attention but it was also a predecessor of the bible opera phenomena. It predates Godspell & Jesus Christ Superstar and deserves recognition (or notoriety depending on your view) for taking the Bible and putting it into a contemporary musical genre, probably to better effect too. It`s not really jazz, but light pop music that uses jazzy type language.
This recording is sublime with the childrens choir summing up what this work is all about, it was a huge success in our sunday school choir!! Hurd is clearly a talented composer who like this individual work, deserves more attention.
