Book Description

American Maggie Monroe is a journalist for New York's hard-hitting current affairs show Newsline. Independent and fearless, the more cutting-edge the story, the happier she is. But when her next assignment turns out to be an in-depth documentary on the decline of England's ruling classes, she's furious at being sent to cover a bloody tea party. Meet the Earl and Countess of Bevan, eccentric, maddening and with family secrets to hide. Meet Daniel Bevan - their eldest son. Funny, attractive and hopelessly alcoholic. Meet Daniel's responsible brother Rory - angry, self-mocking and strictly teetotal. When Maggie discovers Rory to be an uninvited chaperone on the first stop of her journey the two look set to clash. Maggie finds herself torn between her journalist ideals and coming to terms with a greater understanding. This unlikely romantic comedy paints an endearing portrait of a family, which like so many others, holds itself together despite its evident frailties. ‘Hilariously accurate . . . A gifted writer with a pithy, poetic style’ Wendy Holden, Daily Mail

5.0 out of 5 stars Feels Good 27 Jun 2010
Format:Hardcover
I read, but not a lot of fiction and of those I start I don't always finish. Don't get me wrong I love a good story especially those that unfold and give you a good feeling as you read it so you're not in a hurry to get to the end because you are enjoying the journey. An american comes to the UK and engages with the eccentricities and failing fortunes of an upper class family. Good humoured, family tension with an inevitable romance. This is my second copy. The first got lent out and eventulaly didn't come back. This copy is a gift for someone going on a long flight who had also borrowed and read my original copy and wanted to read it again.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a chore 4 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback
I can count on the fingers of one hand the books I've left unfinished and this was very nearly one of them. The outcome was predictable and I felt the characters lacked depth. I didn't get any feeling for them at all. The story didn't engage me. I forced myself to keep going to the end and having made it there the book is definitely not going in the suitcase back home.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hunting Unicorns 14 July 2004
Format:Paperback
Gave it to friend to read - she usually reads thrillers only. She was very dubious but soon the sound of her laughter was ringing out. Very light reading but enjoyable none the less

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but obviously written as a RomCom Screenplay
When I got to the end of this I was amused to see from the author's notes that it was actually written in the first place as a screenplay. Read more

I unexpectedly loved this book, and couldn't put it down. Well rounded characters, funny but poignant too, it is one to re-read again in the future. Read more
