'A journey without conviction', Allen writes of this book, and it shows. Supposedly, he allows himself to be persuaded of a preposterous cod-evolutionary theory. In order to substantiate it he goes looking for the primitive ape-men which, legend has it, survive on certain Indonesian islands. What follows bears more resemblance to the cynical, post-modern 'humorous' travelogue - complete with drug overdoses, exotic women and eccentric rural characters - than to Allen's usual metier .
In short, this feels like a cheat. Only for short passages, out in the rainforest, does the narrative ring true and seem worthy of the reader's time.
