More About the Author

Melinda Kinsman lives on a small peninsular called The Wirral, in North West England. She loves climbing mountains and rock-climbing (both abroad, and in her local mountains of Snowdonia), and she has always had a soft-spot for cuddly toys!

As Melinda has to lie down a lot each day, due to health issues, she spends most of that time using her iPad to write and illustrate her books. (Drawing can be especially challenging, as she needs to keep the iPad steady by balancing it with one leg up in the air - much to the amusement of her family!)

Melinda originally wrote a book of poems for her 6 year old niece a few years ago, but never dreamt of trying to publish them, or of trying to illustrate them herself. The advent of ebooks and handheld tablets now makes self-publishing an exciting possibility for her!

The Top of the Wardrobe Gang series of books are credited to both Melinda and a motley crew of cuddly toy characters. This bunch of cuddly toys live on the Top of the Wardrobe - they like to call this the "penthouse suite"! They enjoy reading, and want to try writing their own books. Most of the cartoon gang characters are based on "real" members of Melinda's cuddly toy family, though some have had to have their names and appearances changed to allow their inclusion!

You can find out more about Melinda, the gang, and their books from their website at

5.0 out of 5 stars Dragons, King Arthur and a very very long walk 9 Aug 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A dragon hunt with intrepid cuddly toy, Odd Sock! How could I resist? Loved Odd and M's adventures in Scotland and this one has dragons! And then, oh joy, King Arthur, my once and future king, became part of the adventure.

This is an excellent way of introducing children to the stories of King Arthur that make up the 'matter of Britain', the myths and legends that have fascinated so many people, including myself, for hundreds of years. Odd and M take a walk up Mount Snowden and then onwards and upwards across other nearby mountains. All a bit tiring for Odd Sock, a very long walk, but M shows her all the places associated with Arthur's adventures on the way. Wonderful stories!

The photographs are beautiful and capture the mystery and beauty of the Welsh mountains as well as giving kids the chance to spot Odd Sock, who is in every picture except one. An extra piece of fun. Plus there is a helpful glossary at the back of the book, explaining the meaning of harder words and phrases such as 'trig points'. I learnt a lot!

Does Odd Sock find a dragon? You'll have to read this book to find out..... Enjoyable for kids AND adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Informative. 14 Aug 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Hunting for Dragons by Melinda Kinsman is an appealing, educational story for children aged 5-8 years.

Odd Sock and M head off on a very healthy adventure to climb the Welsh mountains in Snowdonia. On the way, M tells Odd some of the myths and legends connected with the area. The photographs are beautiful and Odd Sock is an endearing character. She is very excited at the prospect of seeing a dragon.

For families visiting this part of Wales, even older children would enjoy seeing the places mentioned in the book.

I love the map of Wales and the vocabulary lists at the back and the links to different educational websites connected with the story. If you Google these, you can learn things like how to use maps (kid friendly), learn about Welsh slate and there are even free Welsh language lessons.

Teachers of this age group would like this book too.

I have a personal love for the Welsh mountains, so reading this book was a great pleasure.

It's ideal for kids who have a love and affinity for exploring the countryside. They will be inspired by this book. Author, Melinda Kinsman had written a detailed account of her trip to the mountains of Snowdonia, in Wales. This adventure is explained in a simple and effective way for kids. This book includes an alphabetical glossary. Your kids can easily look up any unusual words that they may encounter. This is extremely useful for helping kids understand and learn more about this story.

I liked reading about the myth of two dragons. The author has included a fine illustration of this!

The myths and legends described about “King Arthur and his Knights” is very entertaining. Watch out for the terrible “Giant” called “Rhitta” and his battle with King Arthur!

I really liked Odd Sock's imagination. She encountered and described some strange rock shapes as “like being on the moon!” - Odd sock's vision of landing a spaceship and having a moon walk is great fun!

Last, but not least, I think you'll find Odd Sock's experience of seeing a: “Red Dragon!” most amusing!

Kids will happily engaged with Odd Sock's fun adventure. I've counted around 40 lovely pictures in this book. I think this really enhances the story telling!

I've learnt quite a bit from this well constructed book. I highly recommend this for kids, in the age range of five to eight years. Parents will enjoy reading and sharing this book with their kids! Highly Recomeded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun AND educational! 19 Sep 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really like the books by Melinda Kinsman as she unfailingly writes books that are engaging and entertaining yet also educational. This book is no exception.

Odd Sock is now off for an adventure in the Welsh mountains. The story contains lots of information which is factual and informative. At the same time, when I read this to my daughter she also got drawn into the adventure of Odd Sock. So I felt that she learned and also gained a great deal of enjoyment from the story.

This book will be revisited lots of times with my children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining & Educational 6 Oct 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Odd is a female puppet cum cuddly toy made from a single sock, and she sets off with her human friend M to the Welsh mountains - where she expects dragons as indicated on the flag of wales. Over 3 days Odd and M together tackle all the Wales three thousanders and readers with knowledge of Snowdonia will recognise the routes taken and many of the book’s photo illustrations. ‘Hunting for Dragons’ is a short and delightfully entertaining tale for early readers or younger children just wanting to be told an adventure story at a level at which they relate to. What lifts it to a 5-star rating is that alongside and within the narrative is an educational element with assistance and information on geography, features, navigation, legends, language and a glossary. Youngsters will be learning without realising so! I understand there is an earlier book centred on Scotland’s mountains - and hopefully there will be a future edition relating to my home county of Cumbria and the Lake District - maybe to include Cumbrian counting - yan, tan etc.
