Book Description

Mar 1995
At a time when volcanoes were being born in what is now New Mexico, clans of hunter-gatherers were already living in the Great Plains. Primordial beasts roamed the land: creatures like the giant sloth, the flat-faced bear, the woolly mammoth, and the dire wolf hunted there, often coming into conflict with their two-legged prey.

When Do-na-ti reaches adulthood, he slays the badger for his ceremonial cloak. By wedding E-lo-ni, he unites their clans. Together they must face battle with dire wolves, a stampede of mammoths that destroys their lodge, and the birth of a new volcano, fulfilling an old woman's prophecy and Do-na-ti's conviction that his son must become brother to the mountain.

"Mayhar has a way of drawing the reader seamlessly into her historical narratives. You can smell the breath of the dire wolf as it closes in for the kill!" -- Robert Reginald

3.0 out of 5 stars An above average pre-history romp 15 July 2003

Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book never gets too deep, has a fast pace that kept me up late a few times to see the end.
4.0 out of 5 stars Jean Auel-like 7 Oct 2012
By CK - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you like reading Jean Auel's work and Linda Lay Schuler and Sue Harrison AND you have read all their books, then you will like this one. The author runs fast and loose with descriptions of how pre-history people lived and what they did and how, but while the story line is similar to other books in this genre, she still writes a good story.
