Think of the Battle of the Atlantic & immediately you think of corvettes & destoyers versus U Boats. The role of the escort carrier and the part it played in the battle seems, somehow, to have been largely ignored. I bought this book in the hope that it would fill this gap and it goes a remarkably long way in redressing the balance. The book lists, in great detail, the life of these great little ships from construction to career including credited U Boat kills of each carrier. Many of the sinkings are illustrated by specific flight attack plans showing, in great detail, precisely the individual pilot's contrbution that led to a sinking. The book is littered with great photographs and the appendices list every U Boat sunk by these Hunter Killer groups. It does not shy away from the controversy surrounding the use of escort carriers, where the Americans wanted to go out & hunt and kill as many U Boats as possible...as quickly as possible & the British, ever fearful of compromising Ultra, wanted to use their Escort Carriers in a purely defensive role, around convoys, where ,perforce, the U Boats would gather. Mr Y'Blood is to be congratulated in producing a quite remarkable book, jam packed with information which will take several readings to fully digest. It will certainly be my first port of call for infomation on a too-long ignored group of fighting men & the CVE's they fought in. A definate five star plus rating.
