Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

In 1856, Henry Lee Norris, an American entrepreneur, landed on Scottish soil in search of a home for his boot making company. Having acquired a block of buildings in Edinburgh, known as the Castle Silk Mills, the North British Rubber Company (which much later became known as Hunter Boot Ltd) was registered as a limited liability company in September 1856. In the beginning there were only four people working for the company, by 1875 the team had grown to 600 members of staff. Production of wellington boots was dramatically boosted with the advent of World War I, when the company was asked by the British government to construct a sturdy boot suitable for the conditions in flooded trenches. The mills ran day and night to produce immense quantities of these trench boots. More than a million pairs were made to cope with the Army's demands. The fashionable boot was now a functional necessity. Hunter's most famous welly, the original Green wellington, was made over 50 years ago in the winter of 1955. It was the first orthopaedic boot that they made and was launched alongside the Royal Hunter--another boot that remains in Hunter's range today. Today, Hunter remains the preferred welly brand for those who like to work hard and play hard--there's a great range of boots to suit welly wearers all over the world--from the Royal Family to festival-goers, working farmers and landed gentry alike.

I have owned a pair of these for several years now - they are FANTASTIC! Comfy and flexible, don't smell of rubber and you can walk for miles in them. My husband has a pair of original Hunters and they are much slimmer in the calf. When i have tried to wear his I have had a fight to put them on and my trousers have to go on the outside, defeating the object rather. However, the Huntress has just that little bit of extra width in the calf, meaning if, like me, you are not a tall willowy creature with a slim calf or two(for whom the normal Hunter is perfect)you can get your leg PLUS your trousers and a pair of warm socks down in there! They were excellent for recent walk-to-work-in-the-snow-days too :)

I bought these wellies after reading a lot about how comfortable they were etc. Mine arrived yesterday. Navy size 4. I'm normally a size 5 but decided to go for the 4 as I read they are quite big made.

Firstly, yes they are relatively comfortable considering they are wellies, but I honestly couldn't wear them any longer than maybe say a good few hours...I just don't find they are THAT comfortable.

Secondly, they are a wider fit for ladies with bigger calf's - Now, my calf's are big! I'm generally a size 12/14 but with very large chunky calf's! I was still worried that these boots might be a bit tight, but they were PERFECT with regards to calf sizing! I can easily slip them on, and even over a pair of leggings they are easy to slip on. Superb!

Finally the sizing....Hmm, well, like I say, I bought a uk4, but I'm normally a uk5...The 4 is very snug, but I absolutely know for a fact judging by the 4, if I'd bought the 5 they would have been to big! It's very disappointing that hunter don't do half sizes, as the 4.5 would have been absolutely spot on! But I'd far rather have snug wellies than them flopping around, so I'm generally overall pleased with the size 4 fitting.

These wellies are great for walking the dogs, walking through boggy wet fields or mucking out stables... but would I say they are worth the money? All in all, no, I wouldn't. I'd say they are worth maybe £20'ish. I don't regret buying them, and I'd certainly buy Hunters again in the future - But I'd most likely hunt around (no pun intended!) for a bargain such as an online sale, or half price etc.

I have worn Hunter wellies for about 20 years - so has my husband - but we won't be buying them again and are looking for an alternative. We walk our dog for a mile or so twice a day along field tracks and don't wear them at all during the summer months if it's dry. Ever since the manufacture moved out of the UK the quality has dramatically deteriorated to the point where they now only last us for a matter of months, rather than years. The first parts to go are the heels which are now hollow and they rapidly disintegrate. Oh and the buckle dropped off after a couple of weeks!

too tight
Ordered these as other reviews had said that they were a wide fitting.
I found that they weren't wide enough, even though they are designed for a 'ladies leg'. Read more

Perfect.
They had a slight scratch around the uncle area, but other than that they're perfect. I'd say black is the best colour as it suits anything! Read more
