This is an exciting and well written adventure, suitable for 8-12 year olds. It tells the story of Tim Morris who has to stay in Africa with his stepbrother Martin, while he studies elephants. Tim is an attractive protagonist. The author ensures you get inside his head and understand why he is surly and uncooperative. When crisis strikes he has a chance to shine.
With its exotic location and strong emphasis on animals, this short novel strikes me as an updated version of Willard Price classics such as Safari Adventure. Coincidentally the characters in Hunted come up against a big game hunter, just as Hal and Roger Hunt did in their 1966 adventure. Thankfully Kay's story is much more up-to-date and will appeal to modern audiences.
The author uses humour to balance the scenes of suspense. Some of the jokes are a little corny, but adults and children alike will enjoy them in this context. Barrington Stoke books are written and published with the aim of encouraging children to enjoy reading. Hunted is a quick and easy read which never feels lightweight and throwaway. Recommended.
