Better Sweater Letter

`Twas the season, in this part of the world, where an army clad in Blaze Orange goes forth into the woods in search of Bambi and his family and friends. Not a combatant, Judy Blake Moilanen wore black and fuchsia while going for a stroll with her dogs in the Northwoods of Michigan's Upper Peninsula during the 1992 season. The dogs came back. Judy would not come out alive. It looked like another hunting accident of the Cheney "Shoot Anything That Moves and Ask Questions Later" variety. But was this really an accident? Or was her now-widowed husband going to get away with a perfect crime that only looked like an accident, and live happily ever after with all the doubly indemnified life insurance proceeds on his overly-insured wife?
This mass market paperback is a "do-over" of the authors' "Sweater Letter" (trade paperback 2002). The good news is that there are pictures now. This reviewer is a frequent consumer of the genre and oft states that readers want/need to SEE the principals, locale and crime scene. I am just happier than a Bambi who escaped the headlights to see that we can now see them. The bad news is that, except for updated updates in the Epilogue, the text appears to be unchanged. So, still missing are the cogent, coherent background biographies of the principals found in the caliber of Rule, Olsen, Olsen and Pence. It is suggested to aspiring writers in the genre that if you are going to introduce a cast of thousands, or even a cast of many, please incorporate an index at the end so the reader is not head-scratching "Where have I heard this name before?" or having to add further details to the chart/bookmark described below.
The beginning of this book is a mess, and may dishearten the casual reader who doesn't want to have to create an identity chart/bookmark just to slog on through. Perseverance pays off, as the writing does smooth down and the tale it tells becomes a riveting read. All things considered,and my fondness for the region, I say 4 stars.
So, was it Open Season on Judy? Read this version and see!

Bruce's Actions Speak Louder Than Words!

Marriage can be dangerous to your health. Bruce, the widower, lost his wife, Judy Blake, supposedly in a hunting mishap. Bruce is not well-liked to say the least. He gives you the creeps and he doesn't make too many friends. His late wife, Judy, gave him more than just friendship but their troubled marriage unraveled. To me, this book is another true crime book but excellent true crime books helps us understand the crimes and the rationale. Bruce must be one of the worst kinds of criminals even in 1992 where a few hundred thousand dollars appeared like a lot of money. His wife provided him with a job until after her death and an appropriate mourning time, he was let go from a major hospital because of his misbehavior. Bruce does things to get himself in trouble and only thinks about himself. If he had thought about his daughter who he claims to love, he would not have killed her mother or made prior attempts just to collect insurance money to get out of a financial hole. In the long run, Bruce comes across as a pain in the neck who never made friends or doesn't know how to maintain any relationship. He wanted out of a marriage to pursue women who wouldn't give him the time of day anyway. I feel sorry for Judy's family because the loss was immeasurable. When a marriage fails, think about a divorce. I know most marriages who fail end in divorce but there is about a percent who thinks death is the answer and fewer of them go through with it in the first place.
Murder on the Upper Peninsula

Hunt to Kill is an account of the 1992 death of Judy Blake Moilanen in a "hunting accident" on Michigan's remote Upper Peninsula. Investigators quickly began to suspect that Judy's death might not be an accident because Judy's husband, Bruce, had heavily insured her and she had narrowly escaped death in several suspicious "accidents." Authors Dave and Lynn Distel bring the case to life in Hunt to Kill's 380+ pages.
One of the best things about this book is its portrait of life in the Upper Peninsula ("The U.P."). Outsiders will enjoy reading about the rugged people who live in a beautiful, but harsh, setting. Hunt to Kill made me want to visit the U.P. - in the summer :)
Hunt to Kill has an interesting cast of characters. Bruce Moilanen is something of a dunce; his alleged murder plot and his actions afterward are pathetic. The trial features an interesting duel between a novice prosecutor (Beth Paczesny) and a man voted the best defense attorney in the U.P. (Tom Casselman). Hunt to Kill also includes 16 pages of photos that help the reader picture the people and places mentioned in the book.
There are a few drawbacks to the book. The "trial" sections drag a bit because the authors recount information that they had previously covered. I thought that the Distels should have cut the book's length by about 50 pages. Also, the authors do not provide enough about Judy Moilanen's background.
Though not perfect, Hunt to Kill is an engrossing look at a crime that took place in an exotic setting.
