Book Description

27 Mar 2008

Lindsey Bareham wrote this book when her son Zach first went to university and wanted to take some of her recipes with him. It has since been the book of choice for students and beginners everywhere. Full of simple, unpatronising, no nonsense recipes that really hit the spot, it is a brilliant first cookbook for people of any age but particularly for students who may not have the money or inclination to cook but still want really good food.

• If you’ve got a vast appetite but no money you’ll discover how to eat like a king on a pauper’s budget

• It has recipes for when you’re on your own and for when you’ve got friends round for a feast

• There’s almost instant food and food that cooks itself while you’re out

• Easy pasta, easy stir fries, easy things on toast, easy stews . . .

3.0 out of 5 stars excellent book with a BIG warning though! 5 April 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
LB is an excellent food writer. her recipes are not fussy at all and they are easy&good.
This book is especially good for beginners - it has useful tips and know/hows... BUT ...: this book had already been published under the name A Wolf in the Kitchen (Easy Food for hungry people as a sub title)(which I had already). I bought it (mea culpa, I didn't pay enough attention to the similar sub title and title) and I was obviously disappointed.
I gave it away.
This Penguin Edition is cheap. Horrible production values.

Having said that, I repeat myself: LB has an easy/playfull/good approach to cooking. Don't expect the attention to details u find/have in Hazan/Child. she has taste though and offers good food.
She wrote very good books on onions, potatoes, soups, fish, all in one pot is another excellent book by her... and she is the co-author of one of the best British cookery books of the last years - Roast Chicken and Other Stories (with S. Hopkinson, super chef and excellent food writer) (buy the book/ it is amazing even if u are a very experienced cook!)

2.0 out of 5 stars Too complicated 16 Feb 2009
By Cora
Format:Paperback
Got this for my teenage daughter, who did not like the style of the book or the recipes included - 'too fussy'. They seem fine to me but I am an accomplished cook in my 40s so clearly not the target group.
