I've been reading a lot about size-acceptance over the last few months and have been desperate to get this book as I've been inspired by pictures of Crystal I've seen in magazines, and I hoped that an autobiographical approach to the subject would have more personal heft behind it than the other books I've been reading (Susie Orbach's 'On Eating' and 'Fat is a Feminist Issue', for example). Having been given an Amazon gift voucher I immediately ordered this book, but I'm disappointed by it.

I think Crystal has a very interesting and inspirational story to tell, but it's not told well here. It appears to have been written in conjunction with someone called Majorie Ingall, and you can tell. The author's voice does not ring true, I constantly felt distanced from her by the detached telling of her story. I don't know if this is due to 'too many cooks spoiling the broth' or whether the author just doesn't get her story across in an engaging way. Either way, when Crystal is describing things such as her struggle with an eating disorder, it feels almost like a shopping list or weather report - lacking emotional depth. Furthermore, the book suffers badly from poor editing. The overall structure seems unclear, the chapters are long and unbroken and the author often stops mid-story to wax lyrical about statistics and history. Either Crystal should have been left alone to tell her story, or a stronger editor should have come in to lend more direction and structure to the book. As it was, I didn't enjoy reading it as much as I'd hoped to, which is a big let down.

I am also, like many people, disappointed by the amount of weight that Crystal has since lost. Her weight is her prerogative, but after being buoyed up by her tales of being a confident and successful UK size 16, in recent shoots she is described as being a UK 10, which is an entirely different matter!

I'd still recommend this book to someone interested in size-acceptance or plus-size modelling, but would warn them not to expect too much. It could have been done so much better.

Inspirational Book! 30 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover
I purchased this book as research for a university dissertation project on body image and the media and found this book to be utterly inspirational and a thoroughly enjoyable read. Crystal Renn documents progress from a very ill size 0 model at the age of 14, to a successful 21yr old plus size model. i feel this book should be read by all women who are curious about the pressure on young girls to adhere to the media's distorted perceptions, and for women who are struggling with their own image.

This was a really enjoyable book. I myself am a model so was interested to read about the plus-size world and as it has had a such lot of press coverage i thought i'd give it a go. I devoured it in two sittings! I could totally relate to the whole story so it was almost like therapy to me but i would highly recommend it to people outside of the industry too as it gives a great insight into the struggles and competitive nature of the job.
It's a very honest account of her young career but i do wish there had been a little more detail about her feelings of when she was getting over the illness.
There were quite a few pictures which was great and it really was inspiring to see a beautiful successful woman who isn't a size 8 for once!
