5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too 8 Nov 2010
By TeensReadToo TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Lisa can never escape the thin voice. It screeches and tears at her - telling her how fat she is; counting the calories in one chocolate chip cookie; calculating the number of minutes on the exercise bike.

No matter how thin she is, it's never enough. Lisa's anorexia spirals out of control; she swallows a handful of her mother's antidepressants. That's when Death comes for her.

He doesn't want her soul - not just yet. Instead, he bequeaths a gift. Lisa will now embody one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse - she will become Famine. Midnight, her black steed, whisks her away to lands that are ravaged by hunger. She is witness to great suffering and pain.

Through all of this, Lisa discovers that possessing Famine can do incredible harm as well as good. She learns how to sustain life, and in return, that inspires her own will to live.

I was amazed by the premise of HUNGER. What a creative and thought-provoking way of looking at eating disorders. Kessler handles the subject matter with incredible care, without preaching or lecturing to the reader. I believe that this novel will truly resonate with some teens. I know it did with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative and Informative 5 Oct 2010
By Amber
Format:Paperback
This book was simply brilliant. The reader is immediately thrown into the plot, which contains various amounts of action and fantasy, as well as sticking to the main theme of the novel - anorexia. Jackie Morse Kessler is speaking from a topic of experience, and this shows in her writing, as the main character Lisa talks about her new best friend's bulimia and Lisa's own extravagant eating patterns and exercise techniques. The plot flows well, and at no point did I feel bored with what was happening. It was all very intriguing, and at less than two hundred pages it was a very easy read.

The main character, Lisa, was a very likable character who I think teens and young adults will be able to connect with easily. It is clear that she has very little self esteem for a multitude of reasons, most of which leading back to her mother and what Lisa thinks her mother thinks of her. The other characters, understandably, play a lesser role however they are all key to the plot. The other Horsemen of the Apocalypse are all very interesting chracters, even if they haven't been completely explored as of yet - that's what sequels are for!

I think that overall, this book is very good - even great - and it is very imformative on the problem of anorexia and I think it will help teenagers and young adults understand the issues with anorexia and bulimia. The fantasy element of the plot adds so much to the story, and I think people of all ages will love this book - not just the target audience.

3.0 out of 5 stars BelleBooks 6 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
Hunger follows seventeen year old Lisabeth Lewis as she realises she has been picked to become one of The Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Famine.
It's no surprise really that she has been chosen to play the role of Famine as Lisabeth is used to the feeling of being hungry all the time, she is anorexic.

Lisa works hard to keep her family and friends at a distance so they don't figure out her secret.
Being Famine is just another way for Lisa to escape her life, get away from all those prying eyes, hunger pains and the guilt.
When she is Famine she feels more powerful than ever before, travelling the world on her majestic steed and creating havoc. However Lisa soon realises that bringing pain and death to the world is not what she truly wants, in order to get out this situation Lisa has to face War, another horseman (horsewoman/horseperson?).

I didn't rate this book very highly, I have it three stars.
The story line was good, I liked seeing the two different sides to Lisa, her normal self and her Famine role.
I think the book itself was too short and too rushed, it could have been longer and certain scenes could have had more details in them.

I didn't really feel a connection with Lisa as a main character like I usually do with most books I read.
I don't really know why that is, I think I would have liked a bit more of a background story before Lisa became Famine.

I did however all all the little Nirvana touches in the book, especially when Death was singing "Come as you are" in Kurt Cobain's voice.

Overall, a quick but enjoyable read. I am looking forward to reading the second book in the series and hoping it will be better than Hunger, as it touches on a subject very close to my heart.
