Product Description

Product Description

Food has always been a pleasure and a curse for 26-year-old Frannie and the women of her family. Raised by a mother obsessed with the ritual of dieting, a woman seemingly more in love with food than with her daughters, Frannie and her younger sister, Shelly, have undergone a lifetime of fat camps and Weight Watchers programs and have experienced the sugar high of consuming a box of Girl Scout cookies, the illicit thrill of midnight binges, and the triumph of fitting into a pair of size 6 jeans. Frannie's family acts as if this fascination with food is normal, until Shelly takes dieting too seriously and descends into the nightmare of a life-threatening eating disorder. With devastating insight, Jillian Medoff looks deep into the heart of an American family and emerges with a first novel that is at once heartbreakingly honest, wickedly funny, and wonderfully life-affirming: a warm, witty, and perceptive look at a tough yet tender young woman struggling to understand a younger sister battling anorexia and bulimia, bewildered parents who have grown apart, and her own despair at ever finding the right job, boyfriend, or place of her own. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

captivating story that offers a reader a dialogue to live by. growing up is hard - but getting a sense of yourself is harder. Medoff takes on subject matter that is not only difficult but timely. As we rejoice with Frannie, feel for Shelley, or want to dine with Marsha, Hunger Point wraps up all of what it means to love another person and, just as important, love yourself. Three million cheers for Medoff - cant wait to see what else is on her plate.

"Part I" of this book felt forced and contrived. I was rolling my eyes as I read through the cliches and corny phrases that real people do not actually use. Another annoying habit of the author is the unbelievable amount of cursing in this book--practically every character says the f-word every couple of pages! However, I felt that Part II of the book made up for the awkward beginning. Without giving the plot away, I will state that the author provides a unique perspective on anorexia--particularly with respect to how friends and families are touched by the individual sufferer. Some sections from the second-half are amazing and incredibly well-written. As I was reading, I felt that only someone who has intimately experienced disordered eating could express and convey such complicated issues, and my hunch was confirmed when I later read that Medoff herself once endured and then conquered her eating disorder.

My girlfriends and I all agree this is the best book we've read in a long time. I recommend it all the time to other women--it's really not a book that men will relate to very much, I think.

The characters are fabulous and interesting, and the dynamic in the family is believable. I found that many of the themes and situations depicted resonated in my own life.

I can't wait for another novel from this incredibly talented author! If I could write a book, this would be it...
